So... I'll put a handful of songs I've sung at the bottom... just so you know what kind of stuff I've done in the past. I'm taking voice again next semester, and I know this teacher lets you (or makes you) choose your own pieces. If he hasn't changed since last time, it'll be two pieces from a large work (opera, musical, oratorio, etc.), then one sacred from anywhere...as long as it's sacred. Here are a few things I've sung in the past: "Jerusalem, Jerusalem" (from Paulus by Mendelssohn) "Vittoria! Mio Core" "O Cessate Di Piagarmi" "Sing Unto the Lord" (Handel) "Quando Me'n Vo" (from La Boheme by Puccini) "Give Me Jesus" (spiritual) "He Shall Feed His Flock" (Handel's Messiah) I was telling someone else, that Mendelssohn piece.... for whatever reason people usually aren't familiar with it, but HERE is an audio of Kirsten Flagstad singing it. Anyway, I can't repeat any songs, so everything has to be new. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions. I'm most comfortable singing soprano... And I just say that because everyone wants me to sing "Habanera" for some reason. I'd take a shot at it, but not next semester lol.

Are you limited to just yourself and piano, or can you have a larger ensemble (as long as you are featured)? What languages are you supposed to do? Vocal repertoire isn't my forte, but how safe do you want to play it? You probably can't go wrong with something from a Handel oratorio for the sacred piece. You could also look into the Bach cantatas. Verdi's "La Traviata" has a ton of wonderful soprano arias, and the Mozart operas are safe choices as well. Also, check out Schubert's lieder and song cycles if you haven't yet. They are pure genius; some of the best vocal works out there. "Der Erlkonig" is my favorite, but it works better with a male voice. There are others that are more suited to the soprano register, though. You can sing them in any key and register that you want, which is a plus. Here's an unexpected choice if you can do a piece that has a horn part. It's longer than most songs, but absolutely gorgeous. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvg0Qi-qPcg and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8Ienu2_fgY&feature=related edited to add a link of der erlkonig for fun

If you love Flagstad, how about some Richard Strauss? Four last songs, Morgen, etc? And I second ViolinistForJesus' suggestion to go looking into Bachs choral works, there's allready a few popping into my mind from "St.Matthews Passion" ("Aus liebe will mein heiland sterben" or something of the sort + "Erbarme dich, mein Gott" if it is not too deep?). I just played a concert with many great soprano arias by Bach, cantata BWV 42. Like a white dove descending...

Jami (who was piano at my Night of Chamber Music fun I had a few years ago) sang a few of those in the January 2007 recital she had with my longtime voice teacher, who is looking at new material for me right now. "Vittoria, mio core!" is currently being taught to me currently. I love classical song and would just love to sing because it helps.

I sang "Vittoriam Mio Core" when I was 16... I think. It was sometime in high school. I sang "O Cessate di Piagarmi" too.. but I sang those grace notes and it bugged me at the time. I haven't heard anyone else A woman says she knows where I can get that version of the "Ave Maria" I talked about in the other thread. She gave me an address, so I'll see. I'll look at the things you all have mentioned. I wish we could sing "free" songs... Songs that didn't come from an opera. I like "Del Cabello Mas Sutil"... probably because it's rare I run into Spanish classical/art songs, and I speak it anyway. It's pretty though, but simple. Victoria de los Angeles has a good version on youtube. I think Domingo does also. I've always wanted to sing something out of a Spanish opera, but I only know of one... it's not ugly, but I wish there were more. That one is La Vida Breve... I know there is at least one bit of that on youtube because it's in my favorites.

I hope my teacher will turn up the wick on me and turn operas loose on me (but I'm two years, three months, and a day older than she is; she has older students -- in the 50's!). Cessate! That's what was not in my brain when I first posted. That's the other song being sent to me by the Mississippi Squirrel (a nickname for the teacher who is from the same hometown as Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-TN). When you find yourself listening to great classics, your view changes dramatically. After my alma mater was creamed by its rival, and the rival had postseason games while we had nothing, I was so depressed that I said I wanted to take my own life by jumping off the Ponte Vecchio into the Arno. Some wanted me sent to the counselor's, while my voice teacher just laughed because she knew in an instant this tenor had a soprano aria she has sung in the past stuck in his head from an opera earlier in the month! In three other instances (the worst loss to the rival, which I also lost Thanksgiving dinner and had to starve on the holiday -- no fun at the table when there was no food and others had a fest -- it was worse the ensuing New Year's Day when their party was harassing on me, I thought I'd heard the Losing Horns on an RTL (Radio Television Luxembourg) show -- and even with the colors they were wearing at church, I thought I was an American in Al Qaeda territory.), the 2006 Governor's Cup half-marathon, where my truck broke down on the way from home to the parking lot, and when I tried packet pickup, I was disqualified for being tardy as it had already started by the time I was picked up to the start line, and also when I couldn't run Cooper River Bridge Run XXX because of a race-eve stomach virus that reacted badly where I couldn't even run), I told her I wanted to take my own life, which she promptly responded, "The Consul!". Of course, before what we thought would be our last lesson five years ago (she decided basking herself under the palmetto with her friends and cats was better than living in a suitcase, traveling around the world, so she came back and we signed our deal) she postponed a lesson for a mysterious reason. I later learned it was to do the suicide scene in the Menotti opera (you have to know her to understand why) that caused it, and when my anger goes to the boiling point I'll throw Magda Sorel's suicide because of the lore it has between the two of us. I'd love to try arias or big scared masterpieces. Each time I attend a biggie ("Seven Last Words of Christ") I am wanting more. That's a good thing for a classical singer who didn't learn the art until 26 (I am 32).

Odd thing is, I've searched youtube for videos of these art songs, but all the ones I find are usually poor... then I look at the comments and everyone apparently thinks they're great. I'm no Joan Sutherland over here, but I think mine are lot better....unfortunately I don't have the videos or dvd's from those recitals. It's class voice...so I suspect it will only be a few of us. I'm not sure why he makes us choose songs from big things... But I suppose you can find a "lightweight" opera aria. Most of the others pick musicals, but I'm naturally bent toward the classical side. Some things though... like "Rejoice Greatly," I don't even want to try. I can do the runs, but it's one of those things where I have to concentrate too hard. I'd rather just have something without that kind of complication, if that makes sense. One thing I do try to do is stay away from something I know I can't do a decent job on... I've seen the best of singers try to sing something they shouldn't have.

Ah. Not every singer can master a song designed for another type of voice. That's a cold, hard fact that Serena and I have discussed over the years.

Solo - Have you ever heard of a classical musician named Bryan Jeffers? He died about 5 years ago from kidney failure. He was born in B'ham, but was a student at Auburn. He was born w/o kidneys & they always said his talent (high voice) was because of his condition. Anyway, he sang beautiful music while he was here & performed in many churches & arenas in the SE. The name escapes me now, but there was a piece that he sang, usually w/ another soprano & it was a Requiem. I wish I could remember the name. I would say that was probably his most requested piece. He also did a great rendition to I'd Rather Have Jesus. I would say that Ave Maria would be a good choice, but it's probably overdone now. Uniqueness is pretty important. I do like the German Laughing Song. My college big sister sang that. Give Me Jesus is a good choice. kd

Giulio Caccini's version, ma'am. The more I learn, solo_soprano22, the more I'm intrigued. Thanks for having me wonder and I would love to sing in church, but too many obstacles (thanks to inept leadership who thinks a karaoke machine is better than an organist, and secularism is better than sacres song) prevent me.
