It could for other reasons, but mostly it could be narrowed to these two main factors: independence or just been uncompromising. Anyway, my mother kept to heself after the death of my father. She devoted her resources to God and the children. There many like her who are forthright with their relationships.

Are you saying you think single people are singly because they like to be, or because they won't compromise as to marriage partners? I guess I, too, am unclear as to what you are getting at.

I think maybe modu is trying to say is that a person is single for one of two reasons: a) Independence - you are just an independent person, and can get through the ups and downs of each day just fine. As such you are not reallly looking for a mate. or b) Uncompromising - you are not willing to make any compromises to the way you are living your life now. You have a routine that you are quite settled and comfortable with. Therefore you are not really looking for a mate. And maybe she wants our thoughts on which one we agree with or don't agree with. Is that what you wish to know modu?

I have just finished reading this book titled "Suddenly", which deals with love coming suddenly into one's life. The protagonist was 39 years old with a birthday looming upward. she was quite comfortable with life the way it was so that when love suddenly came her way, in so many ways, she didn't want to risk the comfort of a comfortable life for the risk of not knowing what will happen in the future. Bearing those thoughts in mind, I think that though many singles hope for a mate, you can't put your life on hold. Things have to get done, and we learn to cope - we therefore become independent. And in having to live day to day, sometimes the search for a mate becomes lost as we become involved in the business of actually living. There's hope for us yet though. We just have to keep our eyes open to see the pointers that God sends our way and be brave enough to step into the unknown future on faith and a prayer.

In my case, it's a combination of both... I wasn't willing to compromise my "christian principles" or my beliefs, and thusly I am no longer engaged. As I am still single, I am happy with my life, and make plans for the future based on my present situation, so I am now much more independent and less likely to 'actively seek' a relationship/marriage...
