I once read (or heard it said - can't remember which) that the things that irritate you concerning another are very often the same things that need to be dealt with in your own life via the Holy Spirit! Do you believe this statement has any relevance?

I didn't vote. Your statement says "any relevance". And, that would, of course, mean I have no choice in my answer. Many times it is true. And most true for those who don't know themselves and don't want to see themselves as they are. However, I have found that the closer you grow to the Lord, the more you do see yourself as He deals with you. And you will continue to see things in others---and they can be VERY different from what your bent or struggle is. But He is giving You His eyes, His ears, His heart and His mind. But it is given for intercession, to bear their burden, to hold faith over and believe for others. It is what Jesus does for us. So how do I answer your question?

The little things(and big ones, too!)that get under our skin in others are a way to excuse ourselves. 'Well, I don't do that...' while 'my' real issue is a critical, judgmental spirit, for example. Sinners or saints; if sinners, what do I expect? Should I expect redeemed behavior from a unredeemed person? Likewise, I should expect saintly behavior from, at least, myself. Even saints will disappoint us but, praise God, saints can be saintly too!

Boy, do I ever believe that statement! I know someone who just irritates the living daylights out of me, and one day I realized that I have a lot of the same irritating habits that she has, e.g., offering an opinion when an opinion wasn't asked for! I truly believe that God put this woman in my life to show me how NOT to act!

I voted "yes" because I have seen it very clearly in some. They abhor their mother for a certain characteristic that they have in their own lives, and all need to purge it, not just the mother. I've also seen seen irritation happen "righteously" where the one "irritated" is clearly seeing and has examined himself (taken the log out to deal with the splinter.) But "irritated" isn't the best word for the one upset over the behavior... maybe "disappointed" or "dismayed" are better when the anger is righteous. In my own life, I tend to be more like LCannon stated. I am super in one area and tend to get irritated at others who aren't as mature in that area... but my irritation is a clue to any who would like to observe that I am immature in a different area. I deal with this all the time in myself and the Holy Spirit is constantly correcting me on this. I know this is something for me to watch for and I still fall in this area!! So frustrating!

This is something I have learned to be so true. Like His Covenant, I have noticed in my own life, the things that irritate me in others are the ones I have taken out and examined myself. The irritation comes from loving these people. I've been down the current road they are presently taking and KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt the pain and self destruction that comes with certain choices. It's not that it irritates me as much as it causes me to shake my head in dismay. I'll wallow in the concern for awhile until I reach the point of acceptance and leave that person to walk their own road. My problem comes in when they are given the truth of a situation, make a poor choice and then come and whine about it, not learning from the mistake, and continuing to do the same thing over and expecting a different outcome. No log here, just a hard road of education.
