I was thinking about the connection between the way I see my earthly Dad and the way I view my Heavenly Father. Too often it seems that I tend to look at my Heavenly Father in the perspective of my earthly Dad. I hope I am saying this right. What I mean to say is that because my earthly Dad hasn't been there for me and supported me that is somehow how I view my Heavenly Father. That I can't trust Him to be there because my earthly Dad was never there for me when I needed him. Do any of you relate to this? And if so how have you come to dealing with it? I just started attending a new church in June. And the Pastor there has become like a Dad to me. So much more of a Dad then my Dad ever was. He listens and gives me advice. He is there.

It took me a LONG time to make that transition. I did a study on the attributes of God and it helped greatly. I think the book I used was simply called 'the attributes of God' but I could be mistaken. You might want to look for something similar.

aw yea :) sometimes it takes a while...I am still in the transitioning which is I guess the reason for this posting... I think someone else mentioned a book titled that to me before. I guess it is just simple the characteristics of God? And then it would be accepting Him for Him. Beginning to know Him and not looking at Him in a mirror of our earthly Dads... I've got so much to learn...

Well, I think God built that into us like that. But, yeah, at a certain point we have to transfer certain parts of our relationship to our Heavenly Father. So what you are going through is completely normal.

Great insight. It is good you realize this and are working through it. Many never understand that their image of God the Father has been compromised through their earthly fathers lack or absence. I myself did not truly come to grasp this until much later in life. Once I did, I then began to see my father as a fellow broken human being, who was struggling just like everyone else...and I began to see God the Father as my earthly fathers need, as well as my own. Bless you. Peace

I have an older brother and it was always obvious that my dad favored my brother over me. I did relate this to God for awhile but when I grew spiritually and realized that He chose me to live with Him for eternity, then I did not need to use dad's favortism as an excuse for all my problems. We all have a choice to either hold on to our pain and insecurity or go a different spiritual direction and grow in confidence that God has us here for a reason. We should concentrate more on finding His plan for our lives rather than be a spinning wheel in pity and going nowhere.

My biological father left before I was born and my step-Dad's always been kind of an amusing non-entity that could ground me. Until I met my spiritual father, I was an agnostic. I'd say there was a connection.
