I have recently been made aware of two dangerous chemical compounds that are added to most of the foods we eat. The first is a compound made of sodium and chlorine, and they add it to almost every prepackaged food in the grocery store. It has been used as a food preservative for many years. The health risks of this substance are so well known that it is often the first thing a doctor will try to eliminate from his patients diet; it is a well known risk factor for cardiac problems. The other really dangerous chemical compound that is often added to food is dyhydrogen monoxide, that stuff will kill you if you breath it. Elite athletes often take large amounts of this substance to enhance performance, and there have already been a number of deaths reported do to a dyhydrogen monoxide overdose.

Well, it's Dihydrogen monoxide (there's no "dy" in nomenclature like that) and sodium chloride. Write out the chemical equations and it's simple. :) I replied mainly because that dyhydrogen was bothering me, lol. Want to have some fun though.... google dihydrogen monoxide and look at all that stuff that comes up. Hehe.

Even small amounts of dihydrogen monoxide left unattended is VERY dangerous to small children. The effects of extremes in temperature on it make it hazardous for everyone. I'd stay away from it.

Ugh. I just learned that it's used as an industrial solvent and coolant and that it is a major component of acid rain. The more I learn the more frightening it is.

I found out that it is one of the primary additives that people use to keep their Lawn's green. Some gardening experts advocate using this stuff regularly.

I understand your concerns, but a lot of people depend on it for their employment. Do you really want to shut down the whole DHM industry?!? I use it on my garden, and it wouldn't do nearly as well without it, I am sure! In fact, when I forget to put it on my house plants, they DIE! Tara P

Tara P Well, don't you find it disturbing to know that they regularly use chemical compounds containing sodium and chlorine as preservative in your food!

Yes- I will agree that sodium chloride in our food should not be tolerated. It is also used in a lot of medications- even some that are over-the-counter. I try to avoid it, but it is in some of my favorite foods. We should start writing letters to the manufacturers demanding it be removed. Tara P

Tara P BTW - Did you know that in the city of Berkley, CA, some people distributed a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide, and they were able to get hundreds of signatures once people were aware of the dangers of this substance.

Berkley is always on the cutting edge.. One thing I hate is that where I live I am forced to pay for it whether I use it or not. How wrong is that?

Ironically we produce much of this stuff in N. Cal, and then they ship it to S. Cal and they use as much as they want for free!

There are obviously some very BIG problems with regulating this stuff.
