This topic has come up before but it has been on my mind and heart as of late: how do we deal with Iran in a 'successful' way?
I think I would end up dealing with them as I did my toddlers because that is a point of reference for me (being a mom) and these people who deliberately say and do provocative things remind me of toddlers. When my kids were young I gave them a lot of freedom to roam around the house and yard and most of the front yard. I wouldn't leave a $500 crystal vase on the coffee table, in other words, for them to break. But then I would set down about 2 or 3 rules that they had to obey or they would be punished for disobeying: 1- touching the wood-burning stove (even in summer), 2- going too close to the road, 3- not obeying my voice. I would do a similar thing with countries that are seeking nuclear weapons and we worry they will arbitrarily use them against us and/or our diplomatic friends. Not that I would keep them from touching the stove, obviously, but I would try to do what James Madison set up in our own system of government. He pit the selfish ambitions of one group against the other. So the selfish ambitions of people in Congress, acting in the interest of Congress and their own party would end up pitting themselves against the selfish ambition of the executive branch, etc.. In other words, I wouldn't attempt to deal directly with anyone's selfish ambitions. I would try and deal with the effects of that selfish ambition. The way to deal with men's hearts is to shine the light of the gospel on their hearts and into the situation. Otherwise, try and balance the ambitions one against the other, it seems to me. I am not sure how this would work out into real life. We can make treaties to establish international laws more quickly, but very ambitious people, very offended people, tend to have little patience with impositions being placed on them.
Any thoughts?

See, like I was reading a recent article by David Ignatius who posts on the Washington Post and has an article on realclearpolitics.com today. He was talking about how countries in the Mideast are brokering deals with each other instead of relying on the U.S. as much; that they are creating their own sort of 'balance of power' in the Mideast. I think this is great. Its more 'Madisonian' to me, only on an international scale.
