OK, here's my story: I was saved 4 years ago. The church that I attended when I got saved was an Assemblies of God church. This church was too obsessed with end times for my taste, so I ended up leaving that church to check out other denominations. I tried Baptist and Presbyterian churches, but just didn't find the sermons "fulfilling" - that is, too much fluff and not enough Biblical teachings. I'm pretty in-depth when it comes to reading my Bible, since I not only read, but I study and analyze ("reading" the Bible only just isn't enough for me, I like to probe deeper by studying as well), and I do this with other books as well. I have listened to Calvary Chapel radio, and have listened to sermons that I thoroughly enjoyed and gained a lot of Biblical knowledge from these sermons. Unfortunately, there isn't a Calvary chapel anywhere near me. My question is, are there other denominations that are similar to Calvary Chapel in terms of deeper Biblical sermons? And if so, what would you recommend?

Hi Mark! I go to and work at a Calvary Chapel affiliate. My suggestion is to check the following listing and find the CC closest to you. Then call that church and ask one of the pastors there if they know of any churches in your specific area that do exegetical teaching of the Bible like the CC's do. http://www4.calvarychapel.com/find_a_church.cfm Hope that is of some help to you. God bless you in your search.

Brief history lesson: Calvary Chapel was the name of a local Four Square congregation pastored by Chuck Smith. When the Jesus Movement started in his church, they broke ties with the Four Square denomination over musical disagreements. Calvary Chapel was where Maranatha Records started (they both have the same logo) and one of the early artists was Ken Gullikson ("Charity" on Maranatha 2) who went on to found the first Vinyeard fellowship, and when it spread the network was administered by John Wimber. So both Four Square Gospel churches and Vineyard Fellowships are closely tied with CC. Perhaps you can find one of them near your home. Hope this is helpful.

While John Wimber was originally associated with CC, Chuck Smith parted ways with him and Vineyard many years ago over some significant doctrinal issues, so this is not correct. Also Chuck Smith's break from Four Square was over much more than "musical disagreements." Mark, if you are interested, you can read about the history of the CC Movement as written by Chuck himself HERE.
