I was raised in the Catholic Church and never realized how impersonal that it is until I started to go to a Pentecostal church. In the Catholic Church the sermons all seem to be prewritten by someone else and the Priests are told when to preach each sermon. In the Catholic Church...if you miss a Sunday, no one really misses you and conciders your faith to be so personal that they don't discuss it with you. Also in the Catholic Church it is so hard to join any of the organizations associated with it (even for people raised in Catholicism). When I first went to a Pentecostal church I was struck by the difference in the way things are done. For Pentecostals, faith (while personal) is discussed openly and Pentecostals try to get other people to come to their church. I have been going to a Pentecostal church for the past month or so and love it so much that I have converted from being a devout Catholic to being Pentecostal myself because I see that what is taught to us at church is lived daily in everyone's lives that I see on a regular basis from church. I am also able to get involved in something that every time I do it, thrills me to death. That is being a part of the Outreach Team at church. I get to go out every week and try to impact the life of someone else for Christ. I get to work with the homeless every week and it makes me feel good to know that I can show some compassion to the poorest of the poor...the people that most of society chooses to ignore and pretend doesn't exists. Working/meeting with the homeless (which would make even a lot of Christians uncomfortable) really puts my own life into perspective and makes me realize that as hard as I have it, there are people who literally only have the clothes that they are wearing. The biggest difference between being Catholic and being Pentecostal is that a Catholic Mass (church service) is well ordered and restrained and lacks the joy of being a Christain and a Pentecostal church service is exciting and full of joy because we are loved by God enough for Him to send His Son to die a horrible death on the cross for all our sins. It is not a restrained service and God is free to make His prescence known and felt by everyone. Big difference there!

No, that's not it. One of the biggest hypocrites I ever knew was a Pentecostal and his beliefs on Jesus and baptism and salvation were the the worst I ever encountered up to that time. By contrast, some of the most solid and loving Christians that I have know are Catholic. Don't confuse external exuberance with genuine faith.

Don't confuse external exuberance with genuine faith. I quite agree. Jesusfreak, I'm glad to hear you are so much more passionate and excited about church now. However, I would suggest that the cause is not in the two denominations themselves. Rather, I would say one of two things (or possibly a combination of both) has happened. 1, God designs us to be individuals, and while He does command unity, He does not command uniformity. We worship in different ways. It could be that the way that the Pentecostal church allows you to worship is a better fit for who God has made you to be. Or 2, it could be that the local Catholic church you went to was just not a good local church, while the Pentecostal one is. I think it is erroneous to judge an entire denomination based on a single local congregation that bears the title. Whatever the case, it certainly sounds as though God has moved you to where He wants you for now, and I hope that you continue to grow in your fellowship with Him and other believers!

I've never been to a Pentecostal church but I have visited a Catholic church. The worship service was very formal and traditional. I have respect for the Catholic church and believe that the Catholic church-goers are my brothers and sisters.
