Sorry to start an entire thread on this, but I wanted an answer and this was the only way I could think to make sure the question was noticed Hope that is ok!!

I am wondering about dilating ... can your cervix dilate without any contractions and without your water breaking?

And (in my case) if my cervix were trying to dilate what would happen because of the stitch? How long will the stitch hold it closed? How much pain would I feel?

I believe so . . . . some women go through their last few weeks of pregnancy dialated a couple cm. With my first I started dialating about 36 wks, I had some BH contrax but nothing major.

Now that I do not know. I'd call and ask.

eta: Your little guy could be dropping and putting more pressure on your cervix, and you could be effacing. That might cause pain with the stitch, I'm just guessing though . . . .

Thanks Rachel!

I am going to wait to call - it's intense pressure every now and then with a little bit of pain, but I can definitely tolerate it without problem.
I'll see how it continues through the night.

There is no blood, which the doctor said if the stitch was tearing my cervix there would be blood. I also don't want to get to the stage where it is bleeding (and therefore torn )

I felt this earlier today before I went to the Spa (at one), but the sensations went away, and just started about ten this evening.

ummm...well technically no...the contractions (BH or "real) are what cause it to dilate....or other outside factors like Rachel said (baby pushing on cervix, etc). However you may be having BH contractions and not feel them, and that could dilate your cervix...that could be the deep down pressure you feel.

that one I have no clue...sorry.

Well, it can dilate without the water breaking--I've gotten to pushing twice before my water broke (or, exploded, more like ).

I didn't go in last night as the painful pressure never came back. A little pressure, but not painful now.
If it comes *at all* today I have asked Paul to make me call L&D so we're not having to make a decision at midnight whether to call or not (because a call almost guarantees they'll ask me to come in.)

When my water broke with Addison, I was quite surprised I was only 36 weeks and had yet to feel a contraction. When I got to the hospital I was already 4 cm dilated and fairly effaced.

as far as I know...nothing would happen to the stitch...after all..that is part of why the stitch is there...to keep the cervix closed until it is time for baby to be born.

I have a friend who has had to be stitched with her last 3 babies....and she dilated (but wasn't open due to the stitch) with all of them before the stitches were removed. It doesn't tear the cervix or the stitches out or anything..but is uncomfortable.

As to water breaking causing dilation...actually..they are two independant processes....the baby breaks the water with the pressure from the contractions..and if you are like I am and have what my doctors call the "teflon bag of water"....you can make it clear up to pushing (as did Maggie) without your water breaking...

with 4 out of my 5 kids....my water did NOT break before I was ready to push.......
