1Ch 17:23 Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.

In prayer, David reminded God of the promise that had been made and was bold enough to ask God to go ahead, "do as thou hast said".

When God speaks a promise, He does not lie though the answer may be long in coming.
