The first instruction concerning salvation to the Church is the second Chapter of Acts when Peter was preaching to the crowd was;

Repent and be baptized every one of you. (Acts 2:38)

And that is still the message today.

Thanks
RC

I am glad you amended the thread's OP, there is a difference.

Receiving Christ is repenting from our sin of unbelief and turning to God and His provision in the person of Jesus Christ. Trusting Christ for His forgiveness, and trusting Him for the new life that is promised to all who believe.

Peace

Absolutely. Jesus said, "No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish." (Luke 13:3)

'Sinning'(the natural result of disobedience)and 'sin'(arrogance against the sacrifice/obedience/Victory of Christ)are two separate issues. The result of His appropriation of His sacrifice/obedience/Victory applied to a personal soul is the New Life that results in obedience/service.

Well, I will chime in here just to temper the other side's position when it comes. There are many theologians who believe that Scripture teaches saving faith is required before true repentance can occur, but the so-called ordo salutis (order of salvation) is a hotly debated topic which we will not settle on this thread. I definitely feel the vast bulk of Scripture supports the need for personal repentance in the crisis event of salvation, but exactly how God works the timing out in each saved individual is His business, not ours. Personally, I like URF's simultaneous amalgam of repentance and acceptance as described in post #4. (Hey, we are 2 for 2 recently, URF!)

I could get really technical and snotty and pull the same shots that some others have pulled on my beliefs but I won't.

However I will throw in this thought...isn't "repenting" an act?
How could that possibly save someone?

I hope some of you recognize those questions as ridiculous.

We repent, change our mind, of our unbelief in Jesus Christ and accept Him as our Savior.

"...and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." Mark 1:15

I think it depends on what exactly the question is asking.
If it's asking - do we need to change before we accept Christ, do we need to make ourselves "good enough" to be a Christian, do we need to quit our all sin before the Holy Spirit comes in, then no, I would say we most certainly do not, and indeed, can not.
If, however, it's asking - is repentance a natural and necessary result of salvation, then yes.

Romans 10:9 - 12 (ASV) 9because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved: 10for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be put to shame.

Seems pretty clear cut to me...I see nothing about repenting.

Only when we have the convicting force of the Holy Spirit within us after salvation and the laws of God written in our hearts as per the new covenant are we convicted of our sins and forced to repent.

Before that time we really don’t understand what sin really is.

How does one confess Jesus as Lord and truly mean it without acknowledging their sin, admitting their helplessness apart from Jesus, and trusting in the Lord to save them from sin? This verse has repentance written all over it!

Was Abraham declared righteous by confessing his sins?

ahhhh repentance........

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. Jn3:16

if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.

believing in Him seems to be the key to salvation.

Was Abraham saved by confessing the resurrected Jesus as Lord? It seems a whole lot more likely to me that Abe trusted God for his righteousness, and that trust would include godly sorrow for any disobedience he showed Him.

That's reading more in Scripture than Scripture says. Romans says it was Abraham's faith which credited to him righteousness. I see no mention of repentance anywhere in Abraham's account.

So why are we discussing Abraham?

Because if he could be saved without repentance, why should we assume Christians must repent in order to receive salvation?

Gee MrFribble...that's an excellent point. Because God hadn't defined sin as such in Abraham's age, did he even know what sin was?

God talked with Abraham and Abraham believe in what God had to say. Just as Noah believed God and spent 125 years building a boat when the world didn't know rain...talk about faith.

Do you think God meets a man where he's at or do you think man has to rise to a higher plane before God's interested in him?
