With summer here and routines changing, I thought I'd ask. Also, if you are willing to share....What do you do for family devotions or worship? I'm asking about your whole family, not personal time.

Sometimes we read books of the Bible straight up. sometimes we scrutinize only certain passages. Sometimes we use devotionals. We always pray. Sometimes we sing. Sometimes we memorize verses. We usually sing when we are on trips. Sometimes we have communion together. We almost always have discussion time. We usually have it Daily, but lately with me not feeling well and so much running around, it hasn't been daily.

We are not doing them right now, but when we do, we read straight from the Bible. I would like to get back into the routine of doing it again and now that dh isn't going to be traveling as much, hopefully we will do that. At the moment, we do personal devotions. I read straight from scripture for myself. At least one Psalm per day and another passage. Mr. Manly does Bible study with school and I help him. MM does Bible study with school and sometimes has personal Bible reading time separately. TL reads her Bible daily and has Bible study with school. When we are having family devotions, we also continue with the above scenario. Frankly, most homeschoolers that have Bible as a subject are teaching their children way more than people that just send their children to Sunday school and call it good. But having a family devotional time really adds another dimension. There is something of great value in being in unity and studying and discussing the same thing. It is always good for our family when we are in that mode. I miss it.

We have family devotions, and the youngest of our 3 kids is 18. One of our children has turned away from the Lord and the other 2 are definitely not walking with him. You haven't lived until you have done family devotions in this type of situation, but we are still called to serve the Lord as Christians. We are going through the Proverbs. I used to try to go through a longer passage, but now that I keep it really short, my children are starting to actually interact a little, which is encouraging. Still, God is merciful.

I would like to do them daily but have not done so. I let time and circumstances get in the way sometimes. I hope to change that this summer. Right now we are using "What would Jesus do". We read one-4 chapters a night. (They are very short). I really like it. It's the retelling of "In His Step's" for children. There is always a verse to learn, discussion questions and verses to look up in the bible that cover what that chapter taught. It is for young children. Our kids are 17 and 6 but I can let the 17 year old read the bible chapters and he also answers the questions as relevant to him. It works well for us.

We do family worship every night...after dinner and baths....we read some scripture, use a devotional (right now we are using Daily Bread), pray (and we hand out requests for people who need prayer for health etc), and then we sing songs. This has been part of our routine since the oldest two were very little. We have used different things for devotions...reading just from proverbs, children's devotionals, etc. Right now we are using the Daily Bread one simply because it is a nice "bridge" devotion between our little ones and our older ones. We also train our children to do personal devotions as soon as they are able to read.
