Someone said they thought this episode of the simpsons was funny. This is how the viewer summed up what they saw. I want to ask you especially about the part the I have emboldened. An Atheist dies & goes to heaven. Peter is giving him the grand tour. All the hosts of heaven are in groups and generally having a grand old time. "Here's the Catholics, the Orhtodox, the Muslims, the Buddhists, there's the Anlicans...over there are the former-Atheists" "We all gather in the center and worship God together." Everybody was happy and seemed to be having a good time. This lead the man to wonder and he asked Peter... "Well, what about me?" Peter asked him "Do you believe now?" YES! Said the Atheist. Peter looks at His notes and says, "You led a good life. God is merciful. He'll forgive you. "Even if I didn't believe before?" said the former-Atheist. "His mercy is limitless." replied Peter..."Welcome aboard brother." They were passing a great big wall. Behind it, the former-Atheist could hear all this screaming and yelling and bickering and fighting. There were no doors or windows or end to the wall on either side. It ran forever. He asked Peter "What's that?" Peter replied "Oh, those are The Protestants. They think that they're the only one's here."

His mercy is limitless and so is our responsibility and never the twain shall meet without His Cross. Catholics, orthodoxy, Muslims, Buddhists, Anglicans(actually a Protestant orthodoxy)and former Atheists(saved from what? Belief in nothing?)are not judged on their performance, sincerity or 'goodness' but on one question, 'What did their response to light shone of Jesus' sacrifice and Victory?' Funny? It's tragic.

I would worry more that a church would preach this stuff...not a secular cartoon. What do you expect?

There are several points to consider in this cartoon scenario: First point - John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me." Can anyone go to Heaven? Even the non-Christians? I think not. Second point - "Well what about me?" asked the atheist. The point being at what point does God's mercy switches off to zero? If a man dies NOT believing in God/Jesus - does he get a final chance to believe before he enters Heaven? I think not. Third point - The Protestants (or other denominations) think they're the only ones in Heaven. Sadly, we Christians have created havoc and confusion with all our debates and arguing about our "brand" of Christianity. This is not a good advert for Christianity and is way too far from what Christ expected when He set up His Church on earth. No wonder the non-believers are perplexed and bewildered. Are Christians sometimes Christianity's worst enemies. I think so.

Do I think this is funny? It is interesting to me that men outside the faith have better insight into men than many of those who claim to be inside. Why is this? I've been told of episodes of SouthPark that speak blatant truth such as this as well. These things should bring us to our knees, cause us to open our ears, our eyes, and our hearts to the Lord. He is speaking. What are we so busy doing?

What I find funny is how many people are apalled. We all know how the world is, not only that the joke is old. It has been passed around in my e-mail a fw times, minus the atheist portion. But God created people with freewill either to believe in Him or not believe in Him. I've notice that no one has mentioned some of the so called Heavenly Commercials like Alpha Graphics. Where the angel answers the phone, Thank you for calling Heaven, and as she transfer the calls she comes across a prayer request for 10000 color photcopies and replies: It's impossible for us to do that, you should call Alpha Graphics! Well isn't that in conflict with: With God *all* things are possible!? There are a few other ads in this manner, yet it doesn't seem to iratate anyone, maybe they don't think about it. The bottom line is: We know the truth, maybe a believer has not reached these folks yet! Just my two cents CRH

Of course it isn't funny. Of course it isn't surprising either.

I thought it was funny when I heard it as a Catholic joke 30 years ago. It isn't funny now, but is typical of pop theology.

Don't put words in my mouth I never said I watched the show. Jesus is mocked every day just like we are for believing in Him. Even *some* Christians mock Him by placing rules upon others in what is considered acceptable. I am not surprised by what was aired, maybe this would be more appropriate for Jerry Farewell. Also, why don't you step outside and ask a homeless person if the show offends them, or a hungry person with no food, if the show offends them? Or a single parents who needs diaper or maybe milk for their child if the show offends them? There is a lot more things to concern ourselves with other than a cartoon. Maybe I will ask God tonight if people really walk around with a rain cloud over their head like Badluck Shleprock from the flinstones! I wonder if He will take me seriously.... Crh

I have never seen it. If this is a good example of The Simpsons, it is a real ho-hummer. Yawn. But I used to eat an occasional Butter Finger before I learned they were using the main Simpsons character to advertise it. I don't eat them anymore. Of course, that was about when I was diagnosed as diabetic, too. Ho-hum. Saw an ad on TV once, in which one of the characters said, "Eat my shorts." That was impressive. Yawn.

it is funny - or at least it's ironically funny i.e. satiric. and yes, it's also sad. but offensive? not really. let's not forget that the simpsons is a satire, and as such it skewers all sorts of groups. further, while there are some christians on staff as writers and illustrators, it is not a "christian" show so why should we be surprised by this? in addition, while it may be cutting, there is [some] truth to the content - some protestants (and any group, really) do think that they're the only ones that will be in heaven. by the same token, as a reflection and commentary on society, the show is accurate in how it depicts what is an all-too-common image of heaven -- everyone gets there as long as they believe in some sort of "truth". lastly, i would argue that, in actual fact, the simpsons is consistently far more honest and affirming of faith and the bigger questions of faith than many other shows. don't let a single incident in a single episode fool ya.

What offends God almighty is that his own people think its funny to see Jesus mocked on the cross.

Do I think it's funny? No. I haven't seen the show--don't watch much tv-but from what I have heard of it I won't watch it. There are some programs that I no longer turn on because to me they are offensive . That being said I do think we each have to decide for ourselves what to allow into our homes. We all have to answer for our own actions, words, thoughts, attitudes, heart etc.
