Maybe this is extreme (since China was MUCH poorer and unmodernized in masses back then), but does the U.S. feel like China right after Mao took over?... In many ways, many of Obama's ideals and visions are not new. They are taken from foundations of socialism. A potentially cynical view of things would suggest that when the people are weak and poor and tired....now is the time to promise them change using socialist principles. They will be most susceptible to them at that point like China was. They will believe in a charismatic leader promising equality and prosperity for all. I'm curious if people have that same "feel" of things from a historical standpoint. I guess me personally I thought it was intriguing to think about....Most of history is cyclical. -------------------- Also, in terms of the economy...I've read/heard many experts including the greatest/highest/most notable say that no one predicted the sub-prime crisis and credit crunch being this bad coming from nowhere last year. It was an anomaly in an otherwise still functioning and solid economy. It was due to Wall Street (and mortgage lender) greed, but not capitalism itself necessarily. All other hardworking Americans were doing their jobs and doing fine, prior to the collapse that was so sudden and unexpected in depth and severity. Nevertheless, whether it was a problem with the system at large or just a small chink in the armor, it created enough panic and economic downturn to open people's minds and hearts to potential radical shift in ecnomic paradigm. ...I'm not saying Obama is Mao, but just saying......I'm wondering if there are parallels here to other historical incidents of countries going to Socialism? I don't think Obama is that far left yet....Most people won't even see a tax increase! ..Interestingly too, much of China's current economic success and development is the result of going away from Socialism and embracing capitalism, lol. Ok, I'm blabbering away.....thoughts?

Well, as one who survived the 5000 mile Long March and remember well the weeks of strvation and abuse, who lost many friends to the Hundred Flowers campaign that killed thousands of fellow intellectuals, and as an observer of the Cultural Revolution, where I witnessed millions of my countrymen starved to death by what appears to be an intentional program to subjugate the masses, I would have to say yes, so far Obama's reaign is exaclty like China under Mao.
