I noticed that some users here don't like to register domains at Godaddy. Where would you recommend getting one?

Any web-hosting provider can register a domain. I used to be with GoDaddy but am now with Lunarpages.

If you go through Google Apps, you use Google Checkout to pay for your domain--10 bucks a year. When I did it, they offered it via GoDaddy or Enom. I took enom and it was smooth sailing. Google Apps offers you automatic (OK, I forget what its called) when they hide the contact information for the owner of the domain name. THey also offer automatic renewal every year, so you don't ever have to worry about losing your domain. I also like the fact that Google Checkout was used, as some type of insurance in case I ever had a problem with enom, but I've had none. Nor am I sure what interference Google would be willing to run for me....

It is true that most website hosts offer domain registration. But when I first purchased my domain, users here at CW warned me away from buying the domain from the web host. They said that there had been a few problems if you tried to move your site away from the company that purchased the domain for you, so I went with separate companies--one to host, and Enom to purchase the domain. I have no idea what the odds are of this happening to you, of course. YMMV.

Namecheap.com

Have used them for years without issue.

9.69 per year.

Keep in mnd that although many hosting comapnies offer domain regitration srevices, IMO it's a bad idea to register your domain name with your host.

I prefer to keep the 2 services seperate.

Well I have been in the domain hosting business since 1994. I hosted most of my names through Network Solutions and Godaddy. I have a personal domain registered through 1and1. I am looking for American companies to do business with.

Well-I've heard tales of people switching hosts, and having trouble getting their domain names. There was also a hosting company a few years ago that went out of business without notice, and left their former customers high and dry re. the domain names. Folks had to go through hell and back to reclaim their domains. (I can't recall the name of the now defunct company-if It comes to me I'll post it so you can research it.)

for the above reasons, I always recommend folks keep the services seperate, and register their domains with a reputable and well known company, seperate from their hosting.

Well I have heard many great things about NameCheap.com so I decided to register through them. I found a coupon online to get 88 cents off my domain purchase. Instead of paying $9.69 I paid $8.81. Thanks for all your help. Have a great evening.

Wrong. Registrars are separate services from hosting. Some companies offer both, but not all.

I work for one of the best regarded managed hosting companies in the business, and even we do not register domains.

I agree with the advice to keep domains registered separately from hosting. You don't want any chance of being locked in. And never, EVER use a registrar that doesn't let you specify which nameservers to use.

As for registrars, I once worked for DomainManiac.com, and programmed the original version of their site, before they became a domain registrar. I still use them, but I've had some blips in customer service (occasionally you just can't get anyone) so I'm thinking of switching. In fact I tried to switch to itsyourdomain.com, but they *never* answer tickets in their system until you call them, waiting a half an hour on hold. So I'm going to switch what I have away from them.

I've heard good things about dotster.com, so they may be my next try.

Never heard of namecheap.

We use godaddy...and always use OYH3 coupon. $9.99 becomes $7.15. Any reason why some people don't like Godaddy?

I avoided Godaddy and took enom because I didn't like their super bowl commercial mimicking Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction. I've also seen another commercial by them that had burlesque dancers in an office--for a webhosting company? I mean if they sold designer bikinis---well even that wouldn't make it right. But they obviously went out of their way to use lust to promote their own product. I've never seen any other tech company advertise like that.

Others have complained about their business practices. Never having been a customer, and not recalling anything specific, perhaps others can chime in there.

I use lunarpages.com for my hosting and registration. They have great deals on both. I have used them for about 6 years now and have not had any issues.

A fantastic place is ministryweb.org.
I had been with another company and moved by webhosting AND my domain management to them and it's been awesome ever since. I highly recommend them!

You have to be careful. A lot of websites that look like stand-alones are simply resellers for GoDaddy and the like. Even owntruth.com is an Indian company (as in - from India), though their servers are located here (in Dallas).

I love Moral Hosting (www.moralhosting.com). Pastor-founded and owned. 24/7 support. And they do not allow any adult material on their servers. You can read about their church focus here: http://www.moralhosting.com/churches

I own a web design company and my sites are hosted with them. Incredible service and a really solid product. You can also order right online. Check them out.

What's wrong with reselling. Let me know who doesnot resell. Even Moral hosting is also reseller. The important questions is the service provided by the host. No matter where the company physically located. Even in this age of globally connected electronically one wonders talk about a company located elsewhere.(OwnTruth) www.owntruth.com is an Indian Christian company where all business ethics and standards followed are from the Bible. Most importantly the profits of the OwnTruth are given for missionary activities of the Church in India. That means by subscribing the services of OwnTruth you are participating in the gospel ministry
