What exactly is it? Do you agree/disagree with it? If you're a parent, do you use it?

EC is "potty training" for babies. Though mostly it is training mom to notice her babies signals and get him to the pot on time. As the babies get older, if the training is consistent, they learn to communicate their needs better and sometimes even to wait a few moments. Mom also gives baby cues by taking him to the designated potty, and making appropriate noises. It's a common practice in places where disposable diapers aren't available and cloth diapers are impractical. However, those places often tend to have mud or cement floors, and nobody cares if you hold your child out over a bush by the side of the road so he can pee. Nobody cares if kids under three are barebottomed. I have tried it with all three of my kids, and I have seen how it works. With Gebre I went a couple of weeks straight needing only one diaper for him--he'd pee on cue if I took him to the potty consistently. However, we have one bathroom and it's upstairs, and I gave up out of sheer laziness. And I can't let my kids run around with bare bottoms, even in our back yard. ETA: I have absolutely no problem with it whatsoever, so long as the mom isn't uptight about it. The way most practice it, it's just a natural solution to a problem everyone has, and it's not a matter of punishment or stress. It used to be common even in the west. I have an old Mrs. Beetems household management manual from aroun 1900, which recommentds "holding the baby over the pot" (to pee and poo) regularly at 2 days old.

EC is "potty training" for babies. any ECer will tell you that is not true...it is NOT potty training, it is YOU training yourself to learn how your baby's body works. My Brother and SIL do this method....and from what they have talked about with me it si effective in some kids moreso then in others...but they like it.

I don't see anything "wrong" with EC, but I do not think it would work for us.

Us either. Our schedule does not allow for that sort of thing.

I read a blog of some woman who does it....definitely not for me! If people do it, power to them. But I don't think I would have the patience or time for it. With Dd, I know the signs when she is going to poo (and she tells me now which is nice) but I could never tell when she was going to pee. We started early with holding her over the toilet when we could see the signs, but definitely not something I could have done every day.

My mom just finished potty training my baby sister (adopted). We did this thing where when Maddy wants to go pee pee on the big-girls pot, we squeal and jump around and throw a mini party on the way and afterwards - she's such a big girl, she totally deserves all the attention. If she says she needs to go at a store, we act like we have a big secret and have to find the big girl's room *right then* so we can carry out our secret mission. At about 2.5 years old she was upset if she had an accident, probably mostly because she missed the big secret party in the girls room. Now she's 4 and wakes herself up to go potty with no worries. Since I've never heard of EC, I'd imagine ts kind of like a combo of positive reinforcement and elimination training. Mom says she did the same thing with me and my brother, and we both potty trained way earlier than her friends's kids.... post more as you figure out the potty training hurdle, its a big one!

I have some friends who did it and it worked wonders for their daughter. She's only a few months older than my daughter and has been potty trained for a long time...and my dd still hasn't been...only because I haven't started with her. I began, actually, and then it didn't go as quickly as I thought...and now she's in a cast...so, when the cast comes off next week, we will be starting again. Anyway, one question. I am not sure that I will use this with my daughter...I didn't use it with my sons...but at her age, is this even possible...or is it something you have to start VERY early like my friends did? DD turned 2 in March.

ORIGINAL: 3cappuccinosmom I think once they're near two, it's just plain old potty training. I gave up with my second son and waited until he was almost three. With EC, I think there is a window early in the first year where they catch on best. I know people who are very dedicated to it and they start pretty much from the first few days of life. That's what I thought as well...

I potty train my daycare kids between 18 and 24 months and it's just called potty training!
