I'm trying to find web hosting companies, and thought that I'd see which web hosts small business owners are using. I'm trying to compile a list so that I can research different companies. Are you happy with your provider? Would you choose them again? And are you using your website to showcase work, conduct e-commerce, stream multimedia content, or something else?

Rgod,

I was a web host back in high school and college. A great site you may want to check out is WebHostingTalk.com. That's where all the web hosts hang out, but you can also find a lot of good reviews. Expect to spend less than $10/month for the needs of most small businesses that don't require any complicated back-end services (IE: you want to host a multiplayer game through your site).

In any case, to specifically answer your question, my first web host was WestHost.com. These guys are true professionals- I experienced 99.95% uptime and got nice support- all for $7.95/month at the time. At the time, I hosted mostly static websites with a few perl scripts mixed in, and everything ran really smoothly.

Other experiences I've had:

-BurstNet.com (AKA Nocster.com) (A datacenter): Once I became a web host, I needed to rent a server and stick it in a professional datacenter, and my first datacenter was BurstNet. These guys weren't all that bright. During my tenure there, they had two network outages lasting about six hours; one of them was because their construction crew dug through their network cable. What finally forced me to move was a billing error that took my server offline and had them IMMEDIATELY recycle it for another client! They caused me an awful lot of work and embarassment, and I would have saved myself a lot of trouble if I had moved after the first issue.

Ask your web host if they keep their servers in a specific datacenter. If they say BurstNET, be careful. (At the very least, ask them what contingency plan they have for a datacenter-wide network outage or administrative error on BurstNET's part. If they give you a blank stare, as most college students who run hosting companies would, find another host.)

-ServerMatrix/ThePlanet (another datacenter): These guys are much better. I rented a dual-core P4 from them for two years and didn't have any major issues. There was a 2 hour issue once where they were dropping packets, but that was an issue with one of the networks they relied on.

If your web host gets their service through ServerMatrix, you can probably be confident there won't be any awful network issues. The only other trick will be making sure they know how to competently manage a server.

Blessedinnyc - thanks a lot, particularly for the information about the datacenters. You've given me a lot to think and good questions to ask. I hadn't thought much about backups and data recovery beyond making sure that I had some sort of backup system running periodically locally and also for what is on the web. I'm not trying to do anything very complicated backend - but I will need some basic e-commerce type of services (paypal) - and of course I need to make sure that there is SSL etc. Mostly, I just want to be able to set up a content management system (Joomla is what I'm going to use) because I have some future plans for expansion that will be easier once that is in place.

I'll definitely look at webhostingtalk.com as well ... I've gotten lots of different recommendations from different places ... so now I'm just trying to pull everything together. I've been kind of dragging my feet on this ... but I've got to get moving on this pretty swiftly.

Thanks again. If I had another question, would you mind if I asked you? I pretty much know what I want, but might have a question about a few things down the road.

Hey! I use Christianwebhost.com or christianwebhosting.com (basically the same) they are cheap with lots of easy to use applications. They are also very quick to respond to requests for help and even easy to catch on the phone if necessary. I designed and maintain a website for an international/evangelistic & television ministry with online bookstore and all - these work well and are some of the cheapest and most secure we've dealt with.
