We went to Evansville, IN, last night to see EH & SSQ summer tour concert, and we were not disappointed. They always draw well in Evansville and always seem to do an inspired performance there. Ernie and Ryan Seaton are both from Evansville, which probably helps in both cases. Last night Ernie even did a duet with his brother, Jarrod Haase, singing "Who Am I". Ernie said his mother always asked if they could do that at one of SSQ concerts, and last night they made it happen.
They had Wayne Haun, who I normally think of as a record producer, traveling with them and playing piano, and he is a very good pianist.
They did a mixture of their older stuff and songs from a brand new cd called "Influenced". Ernie said it was made just for the Summer Tour and was only being sold on the tour at this time. This project is older songs, and they did it around 2 of the old style omni-directional mics, (like some other folks, especially Dixie Echoes are doing). They also used the 2 mic setup last night for these songs. A favorite of mine at the performance was "Walk With Me", and another one I really liked was a song Bill Gaither wrote years ago when he was still a school teacher called "The Old Fashioned Meeting". Some of these seemed to be done with only Wayne on the piano and no added soundtracks.
They did their choreography on some of their regular songs, and others they mostly stood flat-footed and sang. There was also occasional lighting effects, but we liked all of it. It was all tastefully done, imho, and the large crowd seemed to like it. They even did a bit of antics on the songs with 2 mics, switching back and forth between mics, depending on who had a solo part and who had harmonies, but it was no different than what a lot of the older groups used to do. We enjoyed this concert even more than we did last year's "Get Away Jordan" concert tour, which was at the same venue (Ryan Seaton's home church).
I wish they had sang "John In the Jordan", and "Stand By Me", but there was plenty of good singing and a good variety for the night. Ernie also witnessed to the audience.
There has been a lot said and written about EH & SSQ, some negative and some positive, but the facts are: they can sing, they have a great Christian Spirit, they provide good, wholesome entertainment along with Christian witness, and they seem to be successful in drawing a crowd and sending them home happy. The crowd at the product table was about the biggest one I have ever been in, and all of SSQ were out there in the mix. We would go back and see them again tomorrow if that was an option.
I hope others who attend one of their Summer Tour concerts will add to this thread with their reports.

Sounds like a great program and you had a great time. Wish EH&SS and GVB would do more touring together.

Here is the story about the new album Bill was talking about that's only available at their concerts:

Signature Sound Releases Vintage Recording

In conjunction with their summer concert tour, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound has released a brand new recording, which takes the popular quartet and fans back to the roots of Gospel Music. The vintage quartet stylings which were popularized by the legendary quartets of the 1950s have been brought back to life through the latest release from Ernie Haase & Signature Sound. Appropriately entitled Influenced, the recording captures the pure essence and simplicity of the four-part harmony that blazed the trail for so many talented quartets.

"We have been greatly influenced by the rich heritage of Gospel Music," Signature Sound leader Ernie Haase states. "We wanted to pay tribute to the singers and songwriters who started this journey that we continue to travel. On this recording, we used players who were very intimate with the art form and recorded with vintage amps, guitars and an upright bass. We even sang and recorded the vocals like the groups did back in the 50s, on two microphones, with no multi-tracking. Our desire is to make sure names like Jake, Hovie and Chief never die. We hope their legacy lives on through this recording."

Influenced comes on the heels of the group's 2008 GMA Dove Award for their Get Away Jordan recording, which was named Southern/Country Gospel Album of the Year and also produced the group's 2008 GMA Dove Award for Song of the Year for the recording's title cut. Influenced will not be distributed to retail and is not available on the group's website. The recording is only available for sale at the Signature Sound summer tour dates, which include 20 stops during June, July and the first part of August. Tour stops include Birmingham, Nashville, Greensboro, Tulsa and two concert events in Ft Worth. A complete list of Tour dates, as well as sound clips from the new recording are available online at www.ermiesigsound.com.

Influenced will be featured this week on the Gospel Greats Radio Program, hosted by Paul Heil, which airs on more than 200 radio stations throughout the United States and Canada, as well as via XM Radio. To obtain complete information about The Gospel Greats, visit www.thegospelgreats.com.

Bill it sounds like you had a good time. I have several EH&SS projects and plan on buying the new one in August when they appear in concert in Montgomery. It will be the first time I have seen them live.

We played our "Influenced" cd this afternoon for the first time. It is formatted as if you are listening to a live radio program. We enjoyed it very much. There were 2 or 3 songs on it that they did not do at the concert.

Yesterday I was listening to the Gospel Greats with Paul Heil and this weekend they were featuring EH&SS. They played segments from their new "Influences" CD the whole second hour. They had a cool idea to make it sound like a old time radio show! But after hearing pieces of it, I can't say I would go to one of their concerts just to buy a copy of the CD.

One should go to the concert because they want to see and hear the group. The CD purchase is just an optional part of it, if one is so led. I really had not planned to buy another CD when I went, but changed my mind after I heard some of it.

it's completely beside the point, and perhaps they got their facts wrong, but the song "The Old Fashioned Meeting" that is on their new cd, was written entirely by a Gentleman named Herbert Buffum, and recorded by the Speer Family and Dixie Echoes. I have the albums by both groups and he is credited as the author, as well as on a newer Dixie Echoes recording within the past 10 years that has that song on it. Even Google searches come up with Buffam as the writer to music and lyrics.

It is the same song, as I listened to it on erniesigsound.com. Again, not trying to stir up anything. Just want the right person to get credit. Gaither has written many wonderful songs, but this just isn't one to his credit.

I thought that Ernie said that Bill wrote it for a quartet that Danny Gaither was singing in, but I was not taking notes so I may have confused that song with one of the others as far as writer's credit goes. It is a good song, and I have not heard the other versions you reference. Sorry for the mix-up.

I was fortunate to attend the EHSSQ concert last night in Raytown, MO. I was not disappointed! It was the first time I'd seen them in concert by themselves outside the Gaither Homecoming concerts venue. They had a ton of energy, the song choices were great. One of my favorite songs of theirs is 'This Could Be the Dawning" and they did not sing that one last night. But otherwise, a great evening!

I saw EHSSQ a week ago in Lancaster, PA. I had seen the current group a couple of times at Gaither Homecomings, and I saw the "original" group (w/ Garry & Shane) but this was the first time I hadthe privilege of hearing an entire concert with the current group. I was not disappointed at all.

A lot of people talk about their "dancing." I don't think I would even call it that. There were planned, choreographed moves -- but I personally didn't find them distracting. It is part of their personality as a group. As Ernie said, while explaining how their most recent project involves standing around 2 microphones, EHSSQ isn't known for standing still!

The light show and video added to the overall effect as well. I realize most groups can't afford to do this, and it doesn't make Ernie & the guys any better just because they can bring their own light show, but it just added to the professionalism of their performance.

I saw them as really genuine and down to earth, funny and yet serious about what they do and Who they sing about. And with a concert which lasted about 3 hours (including the intermissin), I definitely got my money's worth.

Has anyone else heard about Wayne Haun playing piano for EHSS? He is wonderful. My reason for questioning it is that he is one of the elite producers, and he just started Vine Records with Kevin Ward not too long ago. The info I got was second hand, so I'm just wondering if it's accurate.

I know that Ernie has a long concert tour during the summer months, but then they do mostly concerts the rest of the year with the Homecoming traveling show, don't they? They used Gordon for Homecoming stuff after Roy left so couldn't they do that again?

Wayne Haun is their full time pianist. My time frame may be off, but I believe Ernie said he hired Wayne last December. He said Wayne is their pianist as long as he wants to be. I met him when EHSS was here in Chattanooga this past June, and he could not have been more gracious. By the way, that was the absolute best concert I have ever seen-gospel or secular.

As usual, I enjoyed Billboy's review.

Sig Sound did some of the new album at Family Fest, but I neglected to buy it.

Sure, that's mighty nice of you.

They usually leave their table unguarded for long periods.

I looked at the cd liner today and it says it was written by Herbert Buffman, and arranged by Bill Gaither.

We visited my Dad in the nursing home this afternoon and took EH&SSQ new cd with us. He was in a very unhappy mood when we got there, as it was his first weekend there. After being there a while my wife mentioned that we had a new cd of old-time gospel songs and he decided he would like to listen to it. We played the whole thing and it completely changed his attitude, at least for the time. He laid back in his chair and "directed" the music (he was a church minister of music for years, and was a good singer), said he knew about all of the songs, and enjoyed it. Thank you, Ernie and guys.

He can if we bring one and load it. We got him a 19 inch HD tv that has a dvd player built in, which is what we played the cd on. The problem right now is that most of what we own is in vhs format, but we plan to get more on dvd. The NH only has an antenna, no cable or dish, but he gets good reception on all the major networks, and can also get Gaither at times on an area Christian tv station.

I too went to the concert in Raytown. I posted my comments about the concert in the 'recently attended concert' thread.

Needless to say, these guys are a great group of guys. I really enjoy being around them. They are so friendly and pleasant to talk to.

Their current CD Influenced is only available at the summer concerts which is too bad. It's GREAT.
