Hi guys (again) ,

I noticed that a lot of people talked about watching movies in the "So what are you doing tonight" thread. So since movies are part of the single experience (actually everyone watches them for the most part - but I'm trying to explain why this thread would be relevant to singles) ... I thought it would be interesting for us to share our favorite movies with each other - that way we'll have a list to choose from - if needed ... like say ... next weekend ...

So ... what movies would you recommend to others? Please indicate the category, title, a short description, and why you like it.

I'll start:

CATEGORY: Sci Fi
TITLE: Aliens
DESCRIPTION: A group of marines head back to an alien planet to rescue terra farmers ... only to find that humans are not the only inhabitants of the planet ...
WHY I LIKE IT: Aliens, great one-liners ("Game over man! GAME OVER!"), all wrapped up in one big package of scary action-filled goodness.

CATEGORY: Adventure, Drama
TITLE: Into the Wild
DESCRIPTION: A true to life story of Chris McCandless. A man who left all his possessions and went to the Alaskan wilderness for a few months to find out what life is without the shackles of materialism and shallow existense. He died in the end.
WHY I LIKE IT: Everything in this movie resonates with me. One line stood out - Happiness is real when shared. It made me cry. Great book too.

Aliens is a great flick, just not exactly feel-good. Sometimes when I watch it I feel more like I survive it. Also violent (doesn't bother me) and a lot of bad language (does bother me). The latter is why I haven't purchased the DVD (I taped it off TV so I have a cleaned-up version).

If I ever get really adventuresome, I might buy the DVD, rip it, edit out the worst language, and burn my own cleaned-up DVD to enjoy.

Catagory: Fantasy
Title: Enchanted
Discription: A young woman living in a fantasy world is thrust into the 'real world' of New York City when her fiance's stepmother shoves her in a magic well.
Why I like it: It's a fun, feel good, completely cheesy movie. It's made to point out the ridiculous stereotypical 'romantic' and 'Disney princess' movies while still leaving you walking away with a smile on your face. (not to mention you'll find yourself singing the catchy songs as you clean or walk through the park. )

CATEGORY: Fantasy
TITLE: The Princess Bride
DESCRIPTION: The story of true love between a kidnapped princess and the dread pirate Roberts
WHY I LIKE IT: Puns, rhyming, huge huge huge numbers of quotable lines. Just a great fun movie

Category: Drama? Romance? comedy?
Title: The quiet man
Description: A man (John Wayne) moves to his childhood home in Ireland and finds love (Maureen O'Hara).
Why I like it: It's just a very good movie with memorable characters, wonderful sets and a great fight scene.

CATEGORY: CLassic
TITLE: Ace In The Hole
DESCRIPTION: Made in 1951 starring Kirk Douglas. A washed up big city newspaper reproter traveling through New Mexico happens upon a trapped miner. Seeking an opportunity to get back in the limelight, he manipuates the miner, his family, and the whole town, to his own destruction.
WHY I LIKE IT: This movie is over 50 years old and it's still relevant to today. It absolutely scorches the corruption and bias of the media. Kirk Douglas is awesome too.

TITLE: Out of Africa
DESCRIPTION: Woman (Meryl Streep) marries a friend when she's considered too old to be marriage material and moves to Africa to start a dairy farm. Divorces and falls in love with (Robert Redford) a free spirit. Gorgeous scenery, beautiful musical score and good love story (not mushy). It's long, but well worth it.

Good call on this one - a great, great film. I absolutely loved this movie.

Another one (in an entirely different genre) that people should check out is "Lars and the Real Girl". The premise is odd but the movie plays out beautifully demonstrating love, tolerance, and acceptance. This movie is one of a very small number of films that portrays the church as leading the way in showing love and acceptance - which was surprising and refreshing.

So many to mention, but I'll just mention one more here - "Junebug". This movie blew me away with it's realistic depiction of family, relationships, and struggle. This is what Roger Ebert says about it - "Junebug is a great film because it is a true film. It humbles other films that claim to be about family secrets and eccentricities. It understands that families are complicated and their problems are not solved during a short visit, just in time for the film to end. Families and their problems go on and on, and they aren't solved, they're dealt with." This film blew me away.
