You know how they got all these French names for ze film? I hear of film noir. How about film blanc? Or is it just noir? Then they got the word "genre". I thought it was a germ until I realised it was talking about a kind of thing. So why no just say kind?

If there is such a genre as film blanc, can it be said to be counter to everything found in film noir, like say police procedurals, corruption, drugs, femme fatales, seedy neighborhoods, seedy characters, flawed (anti-) heroes, etc...? One thing for sure is, I would love to see which auteur will take up the mantle!* *think a Christian version/antithesis of Jean-Pierre Melville, Orson Welles, or even James Ellroy--if the latter were to invest more time behind the camera than say, penning his literary latest!

ORIGINAL: Giulia Yeah, at my school they go on and on about film noir and so I just thought I'd talk about film blanc. Just to throw a spanner in the works . Don't think anyone understands why we use French words to discuss film topics. Most people don't know what they mean. I know a little French but I don't see why it is used to discuss topics which we have language for. Someone tried to tell me it was something special which the French language said which the English language doesn't. That is so far from the truth though. I think they're just romanticising it. Making it mean something more. Was it Tarantino who, through Pulp Fiction, put the whole noir thing on the map? I may be wrong but noir film doesn't interest me at all. Blanc film, on the other hand, would. . Even though I have never heard of it till I said it . I think what I've learned in my past, film studies courses, France had contributed much in film history and development, even going as far back as the 1800's (exactly when is not something I could remember at the moment ). ...at least that's what my French cinema professor said (something to do with a bricolage of developments, etc...). But regarding the genre itself, a la Tarantino (or shall I say, Jean-Luc Goddard, the actual auteur whom it's been admitted to be part of the influence behind Pulp Fiction, i.e. Tarantino's production company is named after the Franco-English title pun, A Bande Apart, or A Band Apart), I'm thinking wouldn't it be cool to have a Christian film company do something like a parody/homage to the Alain Delon-starring classic, Le Samourai, or even Un Flic? That would be sooooo awesome! Le Samourai trailer link below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lFoTyuBEb8

I don't understand why we need to use a different language just for some things, like pretending to know language or something. Yes I have a Jean Luc Goddard film- Alphaville I have been intending to watch just out of curiosity. I had to download the Pulp Fiction film for film script analysis and when I saw his website "godamongdirectors" it didn't impress me at all. Do you like Alain Delon or something? Do you understand French. I do a little but not THAT much. Would have been good with subtitles.

I think Delon is kind of super cool in his day, probably to the point maybe he should co-star with Chow Yun Fat, when the latter starred what many--including director John Woo has said that The Killer is something of a Hong Kong remake of Le Samourai! And yes, I understood some French (I studied 2 years of it in high school; one summer session in college)... to the point I'm trying to put it into practice on Myspace and Facebook (with some online friends from France and/or Belgium)!

Le Samurai sounds like one of the top ten films my teacher likes only I don't remember it being "le", I thought it was ten or something. Alphaville is in French and I understand some of it. I am quite good with picking up different languages if I am around people who speak one. In particular French and Spanish as they are both off shoots of Latin.

7 Samurai is the one my teacher talks about. I watched Alphaville. I qute liked it. It wasn't as non linear as I expected though. The mutant girl ends up going to the Outland with the protagonist and gets saved from the clutches of the computer by love (hope you've seen it, hate to spoil a film). The voice of the alpha computer was like what people who have had a throat operation have when they talk with a metal thing on their throat. There were a lot of deep statements in it, very philosophical. It wasn't as deep as something a Christian could write though.
