We just can't seem to gel with our mega church and have been thinking about attending 2 new groups in our area. One is an Ev. Free church plant and the other is a former member of our current mega church. I'm very curious as why the former member left and started his own group. They meet in schools. I've always wanted to attend a start up church and miss that small, homey feeling. Any thoughts?

I have a great heart to helping a new plant grow. But the definition of grow sometime presents a problem.

Grow as difined in Scripture;

(Eph 4:11) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

(Eph 4:12) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

(Eph 4:13) Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

(Eph 4:14) That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

(Eph 4:15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

(Eph 4:16) From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love
.

or simply grow in numbers.

As for me and mine I consider that growing in the grace, the kowledge of, and unto the stature of Christ is what is improtant; numbers are just numbers.

Thanks
RC

Is the former member church plant starting with the blessing of the mega church?

Some things I would ponder:

1. What is behind each church plant. Find out what has motivated them to start a new church, and what their goals are.

2. Which church is doctrinally sound, and which church I could most stand in unity with according to Scripture.

3. The structure of each church--elders? deacons? church board? etc. A plurality of elders with a group of deacons is the most Biblical leadership structure (though of course the arrogance of man can ruin just about anything. ).

There is so much more that goes into picking a church, but these are the first things that I would look at.

Good post RC. I used the word "grow" as a general term. We're not mega church people and I think that's our main problem right now.

On what terms did the individual leave the church? What is the doctrine of the church? Does the individual feel the church is about him and his teachings?

"Small, homey feelings" can be found in a home group. Even in a mid-size church (300 members) such as mine it is impossible to know everyone on a personal level,

I don't know why this person left. All I know is he is a former staff member of the mega church we currently attend.

i know how you feel.
about 6 years ago i was 'searching' for a 'home'

i started attending the church my folks went to. it was nice. i was comfortable with the pastor but there was nothing there beyond a sunday sermon. i needed personal discipleship. i started going to one of the local big 'ol churches, but i felt like i just got lost in the crowd. never ever met the pastor. then i started going to a church about an hour away that i really liked, but it was an hour away. eventually i fell into a new plant of about 30 and growing that was meeting in a hotel conference room. it was nothing like i was used to and certainly not what i thought i was looking for, but i was most certainly drawn there.

after a few services, i felt the Spirit of the Lord calling me to serve in that congregation. its been 5+ years, i met my wife there, i've been discipled by my wonderful pastors, i have a wonderful church family and i feel that the Lord is using me to His Glory there, which, after all, is what its all about.

i really didn't want to go thru the searching process, and i could have 'settled' for one of the other congregations, but at the end of the day i had to do what the Holy Spirit led me to do. i am infinitely blessed because of it.

pray about it, and be Spirit led. you might need to be somewhere you didn't know you needed to be!
