Occasionally I get attacked by fire ants. Has anyone found a solution that works well to get rid of the burning / stinging / itching?

If so, please stop and if you really insist on doing it again, ask a doctor first.

I'm talking about putting bleach on a cotton swab and dabbing it on a bite. You can dilute it with water if you wish. It's a pretty common remedy. (I probably wouldn't put it on a bunch of ant bites, but it has saved my sanity in the past with spider bites!)

I've heard of doctors recommending the bleach thing. I just ignore it... it usually stops hurting on its own in a couple hrs.

I'm very sensitive to poison ivy--currently battling a mild case. Hoping that the "cures" I've found for PI will work for fire ant bites as well. Place the affected area under the hottest tap water you can stand for a few minutes. Repeat as itching returns. Usually, I only need it every 3-4hrs. Theory is it draws the histamine out, reducing itching. I don't care WHAT it does--it stops the itching! I swim several days a week anyway, but I've found this time that the more I swim, the quicker this PI is drying up. I suppose it's the chlorine. Whatever, it's clearing it up!

And chlorine breaks down to salt water, which is why it's safe to use on dishes and such. You just have to be careful not to let it burn your skin or to ingest it.

Bleach can be toxic, but you can also purify drinking water with bleach as long as you use the right proportions so I don't see a problem with diluting it and dabbing it on your skin. I use bleach for so many things that my hands are constantly in it, and I have never gotten burned by it, but I also know not to pour it directly on my skin.
