Ok, it's common knowledge that the Obamas plan to adopt a dog -- possibly a shelter rescue pooch -- now that Barack has won the election. Everyone has differing opinions about the type of dog (mixed breed or purebred) and from where they should get it. However, what about the timing? I could have sworn I recently heard a TV reporter state (in a voiceover) that they were planning to wait (or had postponed it) until this April; but I've done websearches galore and can't find any reference to *when* Barack would be fulfilling this promise to his two young daughters.... Does anyone know?

Btw just to add a piece of (useless? lol) information - I think heard him say on TV that they were intending getting a dog that didn't moult (I think you say 'shed') as one of his daughters has an allergy. And that while they'd prefer to get a mutt (like him, he said) from a rescue shelter, they may have to get a purebreed because of it needing to be "hypoallergenic".

Yeah, I know -- that was talked about both on TV and in the other post on this topic. But does anyone know WHEN they'll actually be getting a dog, whether it's before or after Barack's inauguration? etc. What's the timetable? Did anyone else catch that news story or know where it can be found online?

The only dogs that I can think off that don't shed are poodles. What other breeds don't shed?

What a great excuse not to do as they encourage others to do (buy at a shelter), but spend mega bucks on a pricey mutt. Maybe a Mexican hairless would fill the bill, should not be much shedding. Speaking of dog allergies, does anyone else here find it odd -- the prevalence of pet allergies among the general population (especially children) nowadays? Years ago we didn't used to hear of such things every time you turned around. I personally think too much is being made of it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's something in our environment -- either the air we're breathing, the food we're eating (or not eating), etc. If I were a betting person, I'd wager that Obama's kids haven't been around animals much during their younger years, and that is why one of them is experiencing trouble now. Oh, and by the way, there's another thread discussing the type/breed of dog the Obamas should get, for those who are so inclined. No one has answered my question yet.

Maybe they think we shouldn't either. If it's for the reason I suspect, then I tend to agree, actually.
