I may be shunned for asking....but are there former smokers out there?

Yes, I have the horrible habit. I need to finally quit. I would be encouraged to find other Christians who smoke and want to quit, or ones who have. Any tips? Other than just grit your teeth, pray, pray, pray, and get over it?

Bubble gum. Thats what I used when I quit. I smoked since I was 9 till I was 33. Quit cold turkey while my wife did the cut-down method. I made her smoke on the porch outside. I could only chew Hubba Bubba cuz it didn't stick to my beard. I popped it blew bubbles, stretched it anything to keep me as busy as smoking did. I've heard people used suckers too cuz the stick kinda takes the place, but I really had great luck with the bubble gum. It was the only time I quit and stayed off them. They still smell good sometimes, but I tried one of my buddies home rolled ones about 8 yrs ago and about puked. They don't taste nearly as good as they smell, and too be honest its only once in a while they smell good. Most of the time they smell gross to me. Good luck! Oh yeah, for about 6 months after I quit I could pick up the smell anywhere, I swear I could even smell people smoking in their car with the windows up when I was driving behind them!

That was because of THIS (Too little to... no grace no mercy shown):

I quit 22 years ago. Cold Turkey. A very supportive wife got me through the first couple of months when I was a bad temper bomb just looking for a place to explode. With morning coffee and after meals was the hardest times to resist going and buying some more. Craving declined alot after a few months and now I can not stand to be around cigarette smoke for more than a few seconds.

It's great not to have stinky clothes and large numbers of shirts and jackets with burns on them.

I quit (last time around) Christmas Eve 1999 (I think!). I do a fair amount of passive smoking when I'm stressed though.

I have a yearly check with my doctor (and another with my asthma nurse several months later) who both ask the same question 'You haven't started smoking again have you?'

Knowing what my doctor's perceived reaction is likely to be, I've chosen never to start again!

rogasinger4Him= 22 years! Thanks to a wonderful wife!!
We who have never smoked are not sure what our "job" of encourage-
ment is for our mates. A nurse who is still a smoker and works in the ER
dept. of the hospital told me to say nothing because if I say words of encouragement to my husband it would be a nag to him. So thankful
that he has quit smoking for 11 years!! PTl! He had smoked for 40 some years.

I can't possibly tell you how correct this nurse was and your following their advice. However, most non-smokers, and especially ex-smokers, will highly disagree. None-the-less I'm truly glad there are still people like this nurse still around.
As for those asking for help to quit it makes it a different issue altogether.

VERY true indeed, it's not like we DON'T know the dangers of smoking. For me, it was a reminder of my defeat to be confronted by non-smokers: Imagine someone poking around in YOUR defeats and areas of shame all the time: "But isn't it OBVIOUS to you that it is bad for you?!?!?"

...I sometimes wondered what would happen if I hired a private eye to find out THEIR particular defeats, and then confront THEM.

I am from Romania--we have a lot of smokers there and really it seems like everyone smokes. So I was surrounded by smokers growing up. I was 6 when I started bumming cigarettes from my older sisters or stealing some from my parents. I had asthma, so it was never smart for me to smoke, but I loved it and it was a stress reliever. I finally quit cold turkey for my husband. It wasn't easy and there were times when I wanted to jump out of the window of our high rise apartment, but i really couldn't do it without his support. That is not to say that even with a supportive spouse, that I would recommend doing it cold turkey if possible, but a supportive spouse made all the difference to me. I still do get tempted at times--especially when I go back home for visits and see all the smoking, sometimes it is all I can do not to smoke. But I have only gone off the wagon twice--and I think that is pretty good after 10 years after quitting and all the times I wanted to do it.

Been there and understand the feeling!

I've encountered a couple of people on this forum that think quitting nicotine is as easy as giving up coffee or some favorite food. That's when I lose any modicum of civility for such stupid statements.

I joined the IQ generation 8 years ago after smoking for more than 30 years. Did it with a little help from bronchitis and a lot of prayer.

Bill, PRAISE THE LORD for your recovery!

It was immediately after a bout with bronchitis that my favorite uncle was diagnosed with lung cancer at age 53. His wake-up call came too late to save him. As hard as it was to watch him go through that 18 month battle, I still didn't quit for another 17 or so years. Nicotine is not easy to beat.

Good for you!!

I don't expect I'll ever quit, I'm a Smoke-a holic; I can't have just one.
Therefore, I just take one day at a time, trusting the Lord that one day I will be smoke-Free. Until that time I will continue to read, re-read, study, meditate on all the 'good' information I receive; Like things found over in the other thread [Quitting smoking support thread]: such as Links to these and more:

I quit several years ago. My accidental method: I had a horrible stomach flu and tried to smoke before I was truly over it. It made me so sick, I never picked up a cigarette again.

So, I take no credit for what was for me a complete and total cure...but I highly recommend it!

Praise the Lord!
And we rejoice with all of you who have quit and who are not just thinking
but trying to quick!! Bravo to you all!

Thanks for sharing your struggles and your websites that help and getting the flu.. thinking...could there be a "flu" pill that gives you the flu mild enough to help one to quit smoking and maybe helps me and others to lose
weight! Oh my! this could be a money-making idea!!!
