I'm taking the GRE soon. I'm not sure when (I'm sure it'll either be later this semester or the beginning of summer); I'm getting one study book now and a few later. (Just a money issue.)
I'm wondering if anyone found one to be more helpful over the rest, or just which you liked. I'm not taking the subject tast, just the general. I guess I might go back and take the biology test later.

I took mine in Dec 04, I believe (Wow! Was it THAT long ago?!?). I had Peterson and Kaplan. One, I don't remember which, was GRE/GMAT. They were both good and the biggest help to me was the vocab lists. I memorized both and did very well on the language portion. I suggest starting with the top 100 lists that are out there and then if time permits, just learn them all! Both books were good, and they were different enough that I was glad to have used both. I made flash cards for the words with a short- one-five word definition and a sample sentence. I sorted them in different ways- like matching synonymns or antonyms, forming analogies, etc. rather than just rote memory. I kept them in my pocket and pulled them out every time I had a free minute. Nearly EVERY word I ran into on the test was on these lists (and, as a trivial side note, I read "Wicked" at the time and EVERY page had at least 1 GRE word- I think he did it on purpose).
I made the mistake of just skimming the math because everyone said it was so easy. I ended up skimming parts that were the most prevalent on my exam and studying in more depth the parts that I got only a few of  .
My actual scores were within the range of my practice tests from both books, I believe the Kaplan was more accurate. The practice tests on the CD that comes when you sign up for the GRE, however was SPOT ON.
The math section on the cd also more accurately portrayed what was on the test, IME, compared to the books.
Unfortunately, I registered late, so only had one weekend to work on the cd. I suggest registering early!!
The analytic writing section was a joke. I didn't spend much time/energy on it, because I knew no one was going to even look at it, though they may pay more attention to it now.

I've looked at them whenever I'm at the bookstore, and looked at reviews on amazon.com. I bought a Kaplan book already (hasn't arrived yet though), and I'm thinking about going tomorrow and getting the Kaplan book of flashcards that they sell (it's actually a box of flashcards). I was going to buy them used to get them cheaper, but I just hate getting stuff shipped.
It just occurred to me, that I have to get at least an 1100 to be considered for what I want to go into (and that's not a guarantee), and I remember seeing people saying they made like in the 600's (which scares me)...so I decided I need to get with it. I did skim through the math parts, and they looked easy (but I'm good at math even though I don't really jump at the chance to do it). I remember one of my biology professors saying that he didn't know the words...and I really didn't get familiar with the GRE at all til this semester.

Well... I got a 680 (like 95%ile) on verbal, which is my strong point, using the method I mentioned.
I only had like 610 on math, which is not bad, except it is only like the 50th %ile... I would say the math sections in the book look deceptively easy. Don't let it fool you! I knew every formula, conversions, etc going in, but the format of some of the questions (the BULK of them!) really thre me off. Like I said, the "official" study guide will be more help in that than the books. I am trying to remember them more clearly, but the questions I got a lot of were the ones with lots of lines and angles AND fomulas.. I don't think I am being clear- but it was a specific type of question that you may have run into in studying.
Most people have their scores in the reverse of mine- math score higher than the verbal...
I studied the verbal several months, in all of my spare time. I would strongly suggest making your own flashcards for a few reasons. Making my own, I could find a short definition that worked best for me, assimilating the new info into my current knowledge... and the act of making the cards really does a LOT to burn it into your mind, and the words look different in your handwriting, so for me, the little differences helped jog things in my mind that having perfect printed letters that all look the same would- does that make sense? BUT you know your learning style best!

I affirm the comments above....
2 suggestions
1. make flash cards of the hot 100 words
Also, when you sign up for the test they send you a preparation CD.
2. I used it a lot for the math section

Somehow I missed the CD stuff; did it actually help out with what the real test looked like?

The cds that came with the study guides were not particularly helpful, IMO. The cd that came when registering was invaluable. I wish I would have registered a year earlier just to have the cd.

I'm using Kaplan books. I find they break everything down microscopically which helps me put everything back together.
I don't know, I'm weird that way.
