I just popped into a Staples to recycle some old inkjet cartridges (they do offer a buck on your Rewards card when you do that) and checked out some monitors.

There was one that had an image that was a genuine pleasure to see--I normally don't like technology that makes me aware of how good it is--I just like to see the image itself--but this screen was so glossy and the image so clear like I said it was almost a pleasure just to look at it. Glancing quickly to other screens, they looked dull and lifeless. I looked online and Dell's version of this (its my impression other monitor manufactures have this technology as well) is called True Life unless I'm mistaken.

OK--my question is--the saleman said that one problem is that it picks up light very easily, and you can end up seeing a lot of the room the monitor was in, if you're not careful.

I'd hate to spend extra cash for this feature, just to end up frustrated because I'm seeing a bunch of other stuff. How can this problem be worked around?

I've always liked the look of glossy monitors - the colors always look deeper. However, you get WAY more reflections of them, which actually makes them worse to view things on and harder on your eyes.

I don't know how apple does it, but their monitors are REALLY good - WAY better than anything for a pc available at Best Buy. I'm working on a 21" iMac right now and the display is absolutely gorgeous. It was comparable in price to a similarly equipped pc, but the display completely smokes most PC displays. There's a 24" cinema display in the other room that's even better.

My Compaq laptop has a glossy screen and I am often moving it around to avoid reflections.....

Hmm that doesn't sound too good--this would be for a desktop, which would be very hard to move around (talking about the monitor here)...I know they have swivels but that's usually to adjust TO the person viewing, not out of that natural mode, b/c of a reflection...

OK...barring buying a monitor with a glossy screen.... is there anything else that would get me at least halfway there? Honestly....I don't ever recall seeing any stronger contrast between the same image (all the monitors were connected to the same tower), not in all my years of going through the TV department at the local Sears.... I've never been much of a junkie for "eye candy" (after installing XP I go back to the Win 2000 theme) but man this is a feature/function I'd have to have in my next monitor.

Is there any other feature that can do what glossy screens can do, w/o the glare?

Not really, but even matte screens are not all equal. As was mention above, Apple has some very nice screens. Things like black level, contrast, color accuracy, width of viewing angles, evenness of illumination, refresh rate, color saturation, and others I can't remember, affect image quality. I haven't kept up with monitor development so can't be much help here. Maybe google around for monitor reviews. I have a 20" Dell Ultrasharp and to my eyes a glossy surface would only add a little to depth of contrast and sharpness, but I bought this a few years ago and the current models aren't the same.

Both my Sony Viao laptop and my daughter's MacBook have the new glossy screens. I bought an envision LCD monitor for my desktop about 7-8 months ago that didn't have it, but bought a Gateway LCD for less money about a month ago for my younger daughter's desktop...and it had the glossy screen. So I think there's a trend towards them for some reason.

Yeah, look for a pro-quality monitor.

I wouldn't use a glossy screen if you gave me one and paid me to use it. You do not need a glossy screen to get a clear image.

1. Seek out a monitor with a small pixel pitch. If you can get .25 or .26, that's great. But keep it under .28 if possible.

2. Use a high-quality video card. No monitor will deliver its potential when driven by low-end graphics chipsets.

3. No video extension cables.

4. Use ClearType font smoothing.

5. Run the monitor only at its native resolution.

My monitor is a 22" Samsung glossy flat screen LCD monitor and I think the screen images are downright beautiful. At work I use dual 22" Samsung matte finish screens and I prefer my glossy to them. I seen many of the new monitors are glossy and they are great for watching videos because if you had a plasma screen and glossy flat screen next to each other you could not tell the difference.

As others have said, you have to watch out for screen reflections. I just made sure there is no light source facing the screen such as a tv or table lamp.
