I've heard in sermons that all things that happen to believers must first get past God. Meaning He decides what He is going to allow to come into our lives that will affect us. This concept can provide comfort, however, is it really Biblical? I mean, God is ultimately in charge of everything, that is quite clear. But, so often I hear that God allows this or that bad thing for a purpose. But, could it be that we are so desperate for the "why" that we like to somehow cling to the concept that everything bad that happens to us, must have a specific reason, or a purpose? I mean, the facts are, we live in a fallen world. We are sinners (although we are forgiven thank God), but, we still have the tendency to sin. Unbelievers are in bondage to sin, thusly, we will be affected by their sins. Also, satan has been given freedom (not sure to what degree) to bring about turmoil and destruction on our planet. The Bible talks about satan in 2 Cor 4:4 as the "god of this age." So, because of these facts, is it not logical to assume that bad things are going to happen to us? God will of course work through the bad stuff to bring about some type of good, but, we continue to search for specific reasons why the bad stuff happens. Are we looking for something that does not exist? Also, because we live in a fallen world, should we not expect that bad things are the norm and good things are the exception? C

M't:5:45: That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. We do not know the mind of God. He will do as He pleases and we should take comfort in knowing that all things work together for those who love Him.

I think you're right. Too much time is spent asking "Why?" rather than accepting that perhaps we're not meant to know. In our quest and thirst for knowledge we arrogantly believe that we can question even God. God doesn't play chess with us being the pieces on the board. He is not responsible for every act that we do - good or bad. If I decide to hit someone in the face, it is I who did it; not God leading me to it. He is not responsible, I am. I may have been tempted by the devil to do it; but at the end of the day it is my action and my responsibility. God in His omnipotent power knew of my actions. He did not either cause it to happen nor did He try to prevent it. He just allowed it to happen for reasons best known to Himself. We should stop asking Him "Why" He allowed it to happen. Now is not the time for us to know.

“A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.” (John.3:27) “Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above..” (John.19:11) “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John.16:33b) “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.” (I Peter.1:7) “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” (I Peter.5:8) “Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!” (Matthew.18:7)

John 16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." Peace

I recommend to you the thread "Blameless - when something bad happens, why is it not from God?" because it deals with this very thing and gives Scriptural support. Short answer - God allows and apparently does bad things, and the purpose is to bring us into a right relationship with Him in the end.
