How much fruit and veges do you eat? I just got up and had 2 kiwi fruit and an apple. I usually have fruit for breakfast then eat another 2 or 3 pieces during the day. I eat plenty of salads and I was drinking green tea until my dentist told me it stains my teeth. I drink white tea now. It doesn't stain and is from the more refined part of the flower. So many foods have got poison in them these days that I bet some poeple find it hard to always have good food. What has your experience been?

I'm working on getting more fiber in. Mostly from fruits. There are lots of vegetables I do not like

Fruit is good in moderation but if your trying to watch your weight don't go overboard. Remember that fruit contains sugar, and too much sugar is not condusive to a lean, sculpted temple.

I don't need to watch my weight at the moment. I am down to 58 and I don't want to lose any more. I have 5 pieces of fruit a day and plenty of nuts and 4 or 5 veges. For carbs I have quinoa or cous cous, sometimes rice. People don't eat enough veges and fruit generally in the westernised countries.

Yeah, I don't think people with a problem with their weight are eating too many grapes or bananas. In addition to sugar, fruit is filled with a lot of fiber and nutrients. And it can help people avoid the unhealthy sweets they crave. I eat at least 3 servings of fruit/day. Usually a banana in the am, and whatever is in season or easy to pack for snacks/lunch at work. I try to keep snack packs of fruit and dried fruit at work so when I am hungry I don't get tempted to go looking for junk. Veggies- I have at least 2 servings each with lunch and dinner and a V8 at work. I know V8 isn't the greatest option, but it is something I can stock up on and easily store in my desk. I also snack on carrots, etc. For my lunches and dinners, I make one-dish meals in bulk and freeze them and each includes one serving of lean meat, one serving of a whole grain (usually brown rice or brown rice pasta), and two servings of veggies. Veggies, lots of onions, tomatoes, peppers, and mushrooms, plus whatever is in season. I try to go to our local farmer's market when possible. Tara P

Yes, we are so used to bad food, like processed meats and other junk that I find many people don't know the difference. I think it is also addictive and it starts to become the norm.

I eat good foods, too. What I do is shop the perimeter of the store for fresh fruits, meats, and dairy and then stock up on some aisle items as I run out, such as grains and flavorings (vinegars, soy sauce, honey, etc.) From the research I've done, the most natural, lighly processesed foods are the healthiest. The problem, as I see it, is that good research is hard to find. Whatever you want to believe about foods, you can find an "expert" touting that way of eating. It's really hard to sift through the research. One thing I wish people who didn't eat well understood is that eating fresh foods is quick and easy... for example, I can make beef stroganoff from scratch faster than they can cook Hamburger Helper. There is some extra time put into forethought and planning, but really eating well doesn't take the amount of time convenience food eaters think... it's really the research that is the most time consuming- finding it, absorbing it, understaning it, interpreting it, and putting it into practice the first time.

Fresh fruit and veges and legumes and nuts. Yoghurt and fish. Clean fish, not the sort with crustations or in shells but the sort with fins; and meat which is lean, no fat.

I agree... I consider shelling nuts, cleaning fish, heating milk for yogurt and growing foods (because there are so many farming methods, some of which aren't natural at all,) as "processing" so I spoke out of that... but foods without processing as you mean it are the best for your health. You are right on the money, there.

It's nearly all I eat, except for the occasional meal out (which tends to be a salad and vegetables). So far today I had a green drink (greens, banana, strawberries, flaxseed, rice milk), salad (red and boston lettuces, a mixture of sprouts, flax seed, grapes, dried cranberries, acv/oil dressing), some grapes and some almonds. Dinner will be another drink, I think. Greens + apple + almond butter, maybe...

Did it take you long to get used to the taste of greens in your drink? What greens do you use? I've tried a few (kale and cabbage, if I'm remembering right) and they were so bitter.

Haven't ever noticed any sort of taste. I've used...parsley, lettuces, kale...beet greens...um...not really sure. If it's bitter, add more other stuff.

You were in the army? How long did you stay? Was it tough? My training in martial arts has been like the army, many of the guys were soldiers or security or prison guards and police. I also like bananas. I am glad that bananas are back down to around 2 dollars a kilo. They went up to 9 dollars a kilo for a while when the plantations got destroyed by storms and that was tough. Still I prefer paying 2 dollars for a banana than 2 dollars for a choc bar (lump of sugar with no nutritional value). When I graduated from high school, I was not ready to go to college. so I joined the Army instead. I was in for 6 years, from 1973 until 1979. Thank God, those were years of peace. The Vietnam war was winding down and most of the soldiers were serving in peaceful places, not war zones. I was in the field of communications first as a student and later as an instructor. I got to see Europe because I was stationed in Germany for about 2 years. Now to tie this back into the discussion about food, here is what I remember about those years. I remember eating like a horse. The Army in those days fed us high carbs. Lots of bread and potatoes. Lots of meat. We ate a lot of food and we ate fast. Lots of calories, but of course we burnt it off too, with all the marching and running. Then you go back home on vacation, eat fast like the house is on fire, and your Mom looks at you like you're crazy. Ooops! Bad habit. I slowed down after a while. Was it tough. Yes, but it was worth it. The hardest thing was being lonely. I had to motivate myself to make friends and get out and socialize. When I was stationed at FT. Lewis WA we went camping up on Mt. Rainier. So even on our off time we were out dong physical things like hiking. Too bad I am not so motivated now! I need to join a hiking club. People who love to eat, must find a way to burn it off too.

Sometimes it takes discipline to do physical things and everything good is disciplined. Back to the topic, seaweed is also great to put in beans when you boil them. It soaks up the gassy stuff that is not good for you. Not sure what that stuff is called. The sulphur or whatever it is that smells and gives you bad wind when you eat beans? That stuff it soaks up. If you don't like eating it; it's not bad on sushi, is it? I like sushi but I don't like uncooked fish or any uncooked food and I don't like the fish with no fins. I also have asked, on numerous occasions to make some with brown rice. They won't because the rice doesn't stick. I like the one with fish eggs, though I am not sure what type of fish they are eggs to. The orange ones?

We eat "good" food at our house. We usually have a garden (although we didn't this year, it rained too much) for our own fresh veggies, and I just brought home our beef from the butcher today which filled our freezer for probably most of the next year. We raised him ourselves, he was completely grass-fed right on our land. If I don't have fresh vegetables, I buy frozen and roast them or steam them. We eat whole grains when we eat grains. We get our flour from a farm here in OK, and it is an heirloom strain of wheat, and it's also organic. My mom grinds it in her grinder. I keep raw honey in the pantry for sweetening/baking. My kids love fruit and yogurt. I like to buy the Stonyfield Farms organic for them. I like to make fruit smoothies using kefir as a base.

Sashimi is the raw fish (which I LOVE). My grocery store sells sushi made with brown rice, but I don't know why a restaurant would serve it. You like roe (fish eggs).

Chocolate and fresh coffee in small doses has got a high amount of antioxidants. I also like Manuka honey. That is also great for the stomach. Purple fruits and veges are also high in antioxidants.
