I have not been on here in a long time, been busy helping my wife with here new solo project. But I got a email this week from someone telling me that you could buy The Hinsons DVD from the old Gospel Singing Jubilee show from back in the 60's and 70's at the Dollar General store, so I went and bought one and while I was there I seen they had the Florida Boys, The Inspirations, The Happy Goodmans, The Speers and a few more groups from the show but I just can't rememeber who they were. I just wanted to pass this information along just in case someone wants to buy a piece of history LOL LOL LO!!!! Well better go I will try to get back in here more often sure do miss chatting with all of you. See you have a few new folks on here. I am sure they will have fun in here.

Am I missing something? I am happy to hear that the Jubilee has been released on DVD but didn't Gaither purchase the rights to the classic footage when he released all those VHS back in the mid to late '90s. I know Gaither didn't re-release that footage on DVD because you would see it all over the television.

Could be several things in play here...

Worst case scenario is that they are some kind of unauthorized release (aka: 'bootleg'). This day in time, we already know that it wouldn't be hard at all to make a very commercial-looking product, even with some nice desktop publishing equipment in your home. Some legendary group's old LPs have been converted to CD format - some with, and some without, the artist's approval, or that of their record company. In some cases, the record company is defunct, and was sold to someone else, and no one can remember exactly WHO owns what. Remember, back in the day, once a recording was completed, there was a production master, and usually a couple of safety masters; one for the record company vault, and one for the artist.

As for the GSJ footage. Last I heard, Willie Nelson acquired the footage when he bought out the ShowBiz company. I think it's tied in some way with RFD-TV in Branson, now, too. not really sure. Anyone know for sure? And, of course, Gaither's agreement may NOT have been exclusive. He may have just had been given access to use them for making the Vintage Gospel TV series, but didn't gain actual ownership. The true owner may have released them. Or, maybe extended the rights to someone else again for to the footage.

Many years ago, there was a VHS released at a NQC in Nashville (compiled by Eddie Crook, I think) of some GSJ footage. It had some of the groups on it that Gaither didn't mention... Wendy Bagwell & The Sunliters, The Singing Echoes, The Lancers (now known as The Diplomats), Steve Sanders, The Hoppers, and a few that Gaither did use, like The Goodmans, The Dixie Echoes, and The Florida Boys. Wish I had gotten one of those...

Another point... I mentioned multiple masters earlier... It may be that Les Beasley had some sort of right to the footage, and that's where Gaither got his hands on 'em. You know Les was the Producer of the show, and was the co-host of many of Gaither's GSJ releases. Would be interesting to know the behind the scenes scoop, though, wouldn't it?

At this point, if it's good quality, I'd want to have it regardless of where it came from.

I'm going to try to check 'em out this morning. We have 3 or 4 DG's within a few miles of my home. I know that a few years ago, they carried a lot of the old Calvary Records products on CD ...Stuff like The Freemans, Johnny Cook Trio, Singing Echoes, a few (but not too many) of The Hinsons, and maybe some others. I don't really remember what all they had.

Quaid, thanks for doing the searching for me, though! I was thinking of going, but I guess you just saved me the trip.

Hidee,
I just arrived home from going through all of the 3 Dollar General stores here in Irving, TX, and I did not find any Jubilee videoes. However, I did find three or four different CDs that Bill Traylor released with various artists. I sure wish I could have found the Jubilee vidoes here in Irving!

On the way to the annual St. Jude's Hospital Benefit Concert this afternoon, I stopped at several DG stores, and like Gayla, only found the Bill Traylor CDs. (One of what I thought was a CD, was actually a DVD, just in a standard jewel case, and barely marked as a DVD.)

Anyway, just outside of G'ville, we stopped at one last store, and found ALL SIX DVDS!!! Also as previously stated, each DVD features one of the following groups Florida Boys; Goodmans; Hinsons; Inspirations; Cathedrals & Speers.

We purchased all 6. They were labeled "2 for $10". They are produced by a company called 'Specialty Projects, LLC". They're kinda like the Gaither VHS tapes, but have fewer songs.

Tonight, as I was telling Corey Pearson of The Diplomats about our find, he mentioned that he had a DVD on their bus of some old GSJ footage that included Wendy Bagwell & The Sunliters. Naturally, I was eager to see it, and determinied that it was the same DVD that I ordered online last night. (See my previous post.) I can't wait, now, until I get THAT one in my collection!!
