I love makeover shows and lately I've become a fan of the shows on HGTV. I love "Deserving Design, Myles of Style and Color Splash. I even order the free ones they have now On Demand when I feel like. The only thing that concerns me is the trend I've been noticing lately of featuring more gay homeowners. It didn't bother me too much at first but now it's shown more and more. I guess from a secular stand point it's just a nod toward more diversity. But it's just a bit unsetlling for me since I'm seeing more of it and will see more. Anyone else noticing it?

HGTV has always featured many gay couples. In fact, for years it has struck me as funny/ironic that some of the same "church ladies" who are the first to jump on the boycott bandwagon when a homosexual storyline shows up on prime time FICTION comedies or drama or when a consumer giant allegedly starts " promoting a homosexual agenda" are often quick to proudly claim " Oh, I don't watch much TV, there is so much trash. I only watch HGTV these days"

Yes, I've noticed. I became a big fan of shows as House Hunters and Small Space Big Style, etc., on the HGTV channel. I guess I was oblivious somewhat to the trend when I first began tuning in then suddenly took note that a lot of the featured people were same sex folks seemingly together. And I agree, I think stuff as on there more promotes that lifestyle than most of the fictional shows.

I also like watching these shows on HGTV. And I have notice more gay couples being feature. Then there is this one show which I think is so weird. It has something to do with what astrological sign your are. And that determines how to decorate your home.

they used to not have as many.....I could go a week or more without running into a show with a gay couple, but I too noticed that a couple of years ago all of a sudden there was a surge of them showing up ALL the time. We moved to Germany in 2004, and back then it was rare....moved back to the US last year and it was sickening the amount of times I had to turn the channel or turn it off because of that. I refuse to watch whatever show it is, no matter how good the design is, if it is a gay couple. Sometimes it's just brothers or sisters, or things like that.....so I usually stick around long enough to find that out.....but if it's not then I ditch that program and don't watch it.

I think it's "dangerous." The more they put it on TV the more generally accepted it becomes. Within a generation, only "hard-core Christians" will see anything wrong with it. BTW, when the show I'm watching features a single or "married" gay, I switch the channels. It will not become acceptable to me to act like the gay lifestyle is okay.

I see your point about how there's a difference from a designer on a program who just happens to be gay, to the topic being shown in detail. For I enjoy shows like Survivor, The Amazing Race, and Project Runway, etc., that have had gay persons on there from day one, and I'm more concerned with what the show's about, the game, challenges, projects the contestants do, etc. With some of the shows on HGTV, and perhaps I'm being somewhat hypocritical, that feature a gay pair looking for a house together, or showcasing their own, I'm more bothered by that for I feel it's on a more personal level and the viewer is being invited into their lives.

I do enjoy If Walls Could Talk and I don't remember seeing any homosexual couples on there. However, it's been a while since I've been able to watch that show, so I could be wrong.

The media is wanting to push the homosexual agenda and this is one way to do it.

I've noticed that too. I didn't know what to think of it. I found myself asking whether I should watch those shows when the gay couples were on there. I don't watch much of the shows now but not for that reason. I think the media does try and push gay relationships.

What about if the show features an unmarried heterosexual couple living together? -Dan.

Does anybody still watch This Old House? I always found that WAY more interesting than anything on HGTV - they always had real craftsmen doing real projects, not a bunch of pretty faces who can barely hold a drill making fixtures out of plywood and dressing them up with fabric & glue. If you want to talk about budgets - the people on TOH drop CRAZY money on their jobs. -Dan.

Oh yeah Sarah, I totally agree with you regarding judging others and how they spend their money. My dh and I used to watch lots of HGTV shows, especially the remodeling ones. My comment was more directed at us ( Christians) not at judging the lifestyles of others. I just got to the point where these "over the top" make-overs started to disgust me. So I find myself convicted enough about it that it is no longer entertaining. My point was: The Bible has as much ( actually more) to say about greed, money, giving to the poor, materialism, covetousness than homosexual behavior ( not that is isn't a sin too). It just saddens me that Christians in general are fine with this type of programming until a gay couple shows up.

iluvatar beat me to it...I'm almost more discouraged by the number of unmarried-living-together-couples-perparing-to-get-married-by-moving-into-their-first-home shows. Almost like marriage is the afterthought, not a priority....

It is sad that Christians get caught up in things like that....it perpetuates the mentality of greed for sure...and of debt (which is a major one for me!!!!). As far as what shows I will and will not watch though, I personally draw the line with these criteria (my own personal convictions here).....I do not watch if it is just plain "showing off" of material possessions (such as those shows that take you through mansions, etc)...I do not watch if I feel the people are portraying a lifestyle I do not approve of (gay, living together, etc)...I do not watch if I do not like the design style they are doing (some of them are just ghastly!!!)...I do not watch if it is featuring eastern type designs (I esp get annoyed with some shows putting an idol like bhuda(sp?) in every room somewhere) or fung shai (sp?) type stuff...I don't watch if the people are annoying (oh yeah, that gets to me big time!!!!)...I do not watch if the people on seem to not have any good regard towards one another or are fighting about things or being rude to others all through the show (fits into the annoying category I guess)...I tend to have a lot of convictions I guess, but those are the main ones that determine if I will or will not watch a show.

Would be interesting to see the "ratio" of gay vs. "non gay" households submitting information regarding their homes to be included in the show. All stereotypes aside, HGTV probably has a high "gay" viewership, which would lead to more of them "applying" to be on the show, and thus ending up on TV. quote:

Just as "hard core" Christians were totally against "mixed race" marriage and "desegregation" of schools a mere few years ago. THAT was a TOTALLY "Dangerous" thing to have happen!!!!! (at least to them it was)....my parents moved from the house I was born in to a totally different part of the metro area, just so I wouldn't have to go to school with "THEM"!

My mom, older sister, and I were talking about this very thing not too long ago. We spend a lot of time watching shows on HGTV, and it seems like gay couples are showing up more and more. I get so disgusted when they make-over the master bedroom or bathroom in such cases.

We used to watch "Trading Spaces" on TLC every week, then suddenly one gay couple after another began popping up. Our kids loved the show, and we'd have to skip those episodes.....now it's been years since we've really watched it. It became too frequent that we gave up on it. Now we see it on Food Network, Animal Planet,...everywhere.

What's the difference in a gay couple on a home improvement show and watching shows where heterosexual couples are living together/having sex, etc.? I'm sincerely asking in light of the soap opera threads that have popped up.
