Good Morning, I am new to this so bear with me. My 14 year old is a great kid but worries to excess. He has anxiety and if he does something wrong he agonizes over it. I am always telling him that Jesus came to forgive and that we are not under the law. Does anyone have any suggestions for me. I have pryed and pray over him every morning on the way to work. Thanks for listening

He worries about past things, like if he said some thing hurtful to someone. I tell him it is past but he seems to get stuck. He may be ocd. He is such a sweet child and he thinks way too much. He worries he he sins and even when he asks forgiveness he cant seem to move on. This morning he was worrying over forgetting to finish an assignment. I told him to read what he could and then it was not the end of the world.

He sounds like such a sweet kid with admirable traits. But, you're right about the worrying. Does he know the serenity prayer? The idea of it is genius, I think. He doesn't have repeat it and pray it over and over, but in his own words pray the same type of things. Does he pray himself?

yes, it is just so hard to know where. He thinks so deeply that sometimes the lessons taught at school, he is in a Christian school, confuse him, like predistination for example. I dont want him to be opened up to more things that will upset him. We have been to the Dr and he has some medicine that helps. I was just hoping someone else had been though the same thing.

You might find Dr. Daniel Amen's books helpful. He has been a pioneer in using brain scans to diagnose mental health problems and brain damage. But that's not why I'm recommending his books to you. He writes about ANTs - automatic negative thoughts, and how we can work to change them. So there are exercises in some of his books working on how to change our thought process to overcome that problem. He's a Christian, although his books are targeted towards mass market and not specifically Christian. The concept of ANTs is part of cognitive behavioral therapy, which a number of other people have brought up here on Crosswalk as a type of counseling that they don't believe conflicts with their Christian faith. I went to a LSW (licensed social worker) to deal with some anxiety issues a while back. She taught me some breathing exercises, which definitely helped me calm down. Visualization would be more controversial, but she encouraged me to try one that didn't conflict with my faith. I had to go to court and I was very concerned about the outcome. She told me to imagine that God was physically right there with me in court, walking with me, with His arms around me. That helped a lot as well.

Thanks so much for mentioning DR Amens. I have never herad of him but the ANT s sound like the problem. The negative thoughts just seem to pop in there,he tries not to think of them but they come. I know the devil is attacking but he is only 14 so it is hard for him to fight. I will get one of the books as I feel that might really help. Thanks again so much. Some of the time I feel so alone in trying to find help and to most people it is just such a vague idea . Thanks again.

As far as Dr. Amen's books go, the following might be helpful Change Your Brain, Change Your Life Healing Anxiety and Depression I think you'd find some of the same ground covered in both books. Your local library might have one or both of them - and these are also available as trade paperbacks, so not as expensive as hardbacks. Dr. Amen also has a lot of experience with medication and complementary treatments (nutritional supplements, etc.).

You are very right to consider OCD. After all, one in 40 people have that disorder. I am a Christian and I have OCD. I would suggest you look into http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/serenitybay/ It is a site for Christians with OCD and you could find much support. also it is important for him to be diagnosed and to find help. You could go to the OCD foundation website for help as well. http://www.ocfoundation.org/ Please write to me personally if I may be of further help. God bless you.

Thanks again. This sounds like me. I have anxiety and obsessive disorders which cause these self-defeating, looping thoughts, to swarm in my head and drive me nuts. I am not medicated. I am not against medication, but I chose to try and fight through the problem the old-fashion way myself. I think in addition to medication, keep him in some counseling, and to learn tricks and what to do when these episodes occur. It will be different for everyone, but find what will work for him. It is a manageable issue, especially with the aid of medication. Just take it slow, and let him know that it is okay to deal with it. It doesn't make him a freak, he is not "crazy," and it doesn't have to last forever.
