Link to the Biblical Heroes of the Faith

Hebrews Chapter 11 has been described as the 'Christian Hall of the Heroes of the Faith'. There are many Biblical examples of people whom God used and who lived by faith.

Have you ever been challenged by a more modern day hero of the faith? Who are they and what Godly characteristic particularly do you admire/appreciate about them?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
George Muller is one such Godly man whose testimony the Lord has used to challenge me in my own life. George Muller and his wife were used of God to care for thousands of orphaned children in the UK. Under God's guidance, George gave shelter, food, education, respect but much more importantly - he brought the love of God into their lives. His simple faith that God would provide for all their needs was more than met over and over and over again during his Christian lifetime. His was a life lived moment-by-moment by faith and completely surrendered to God. George truly lived out the text that says: "the just shall live by faith".

Thank you God for such a Godly modern day example. Thank you for what you can do in the lives of someone totally surrendered to You. Amen.

The guy who cleans the toilets at church.

To me, the person you don't know who does something for you and gets no accolade is much more of a "hero" than Billy Graham or even Mother Teresa.

Sure these more notable people do great things...but they have recieved their reward.

Real life heros...they happen everyday. I had a flat coming home from work at midnight. I was changing my tire, in no need of help, but a gentlman stopped and helped me anyways. He was, I think an EMT. I thanked him and he said no problem and went on his way.

I think...heros exist because so few really care, that when someone does? It looks miraculous.

Amen, SonInMe1. The faithful, day in day out, performers of tasks such as toilet cleaning get my vote as well.

And I think this is an important reminder. We can so easily focus on the one who does the 'big deal', the great deed and overlook the one who has been faithful to just keep on keeping on.

Another great question.

My 'heroes' are people like Beverly who calls me just to say she loves me. Or Karen who always has a hug for me. Or Vickie who loves me on good days and bad. Their encouragement to me is priceless.

Re: posts #2 and #3 - yes so often the person in the quiet position of service is overlooked. Very good point guys.

And Little_1, after your reminder of 'heroes of the faith', I decided that I would write a note to my friend, Beverly, to let her know that I see her as my 'hero'! Thank you, sweet sister. I know that my friend will be greatly blessed by this acknowledgment.

I look up to the mom of a little boy that I take care of a few times a week. He has CHARGE syndrome, and his mother is amazing. She has fought so much for her son, she has learned the beauracry that exists in everything to help people with special needs, she is a constant source of love for her son. You can see it radiating from within her. She is a lady who walks in Christ and has over the past few years shown me what it means to be a Christian woman- a mother, a wife, and a woman. She is my modern day Christian hero. She inspires me everyday and constantly challenges what I have been taught to believe as a child.

Also, there was a stranger that I came across a few years ago- my second year in college. I was distraught over something (I cannot even remember what!) And I was walking through the city in tears and this guy rode his bike past me, stopped, turned around, jumped off his bike and engulfed me in a hug. It was not threatening- it was comforting. Me, who at the time hated to be touched in any way, let him hug me. I was comforted and I felt God telling me that it would be okay. After a few minutes, that boy got back on his bike and rode off- I never saw him again- but I had stopped crying and forgot what had upset me. People like that- random acts of kindness that put hope back into my world are my heroes. I do not know if he was a Christian, but I know he brought God into my world again.

I have a hero who was at one time my boss!

Several years ago, we were in a church that split. We weren't fighting over a little inconsequential thing like I've heard people say church fights are over. This was a big deal that affected a lot of people. 100 people, which was half its membership, left the church, including my husband and me. But one particular couple, who had some of the most reason to feel wronged by this church, did not leave, and did not fight with the other members. They were badly hurt, especially the lady (the one who had been my boss), but they remained faithful in spite of all that happened. Their faithfulness made me feel ambivalent about leaving and was certainly instrumental in bringing us back--just knowing that they were still there.

My church today has a totally different atmosphere. We haven't totally recouped our losses, and I'm not sure if anyone else besides my husband and me who left at that time ever came back. But a marvelous amount of healing and forgiveness has taken place. I don't think we're all the way there yet--there are some subjects in the history of our church that don't get talked about. The couple I've been talking about still has their membership there, but no longer attend, but only because they are now missionaries in the Czech Republic. When they are in town, they are in our church still. I'm always very excited to see them when they come around!

I haven't given details or told what the fight was about because I've been trying to tell this story in a way that did not look like I was saying the split was all the church's fault and that they did a terrible thing to this lady. At the time I believed that. And I still think that if there was fault, it certainly wasn't from her. But let's just say that there were some strong differences of opinion from a group of very sincere believers. In the Bible, Paul and Barnabas had this happen to them. I already admired this lady before any of it happened, and her faithfulness in trial increased that admiration.
