Right now I do it the old fashioned way, bum in the air, pulling by out by hands. Which is getting really hard, I might add, with a beach ball in the front. I do try to do it on my hands and knees, but my one hand gives out and my knees usually can't take that much more. Sometimes I'm able to squat (oh, I am so lady like when I am weeding), but even that is trying. I've been investigating weeding tools. I don't like using a hoe, eats up too much soil, and I have to readjust the soil after I get the weeds out. A rake is too wide. Plus it doesn't get all the weeds. I've seen a certain tool called a circle hoe. Have you used it? Does it work? What ways do you effectively weed your garden?

I use a hoe for most of the weeding, but I only weed a few times before I mulch. Once dh cuts the grass and the plants get tall enough not to be swamped I put old fallen leaves or fresh cut grass around them. Thick enough so the weeds don't develop, but not so much to overwhelm the plant. This cuts down on weeding A LOT. Some of the weeds are too close to the plants or under climbing poles. Then I just squat down for a minute and clean it out.

My house was a repo and the yards were basically one big weed when I moved in. I'm still battling with weeds in the grass (mostly where I seeded - not as much where I laid sod. I will never seed a lawn again!), but each year my garden beds are easier and easier to keep looking nice. Bark mulch is your friend. Fewer weeds will come up and the ones that do are easier to pull up because the bark helps hold moisture in longer in the soil (I live in a dessert so this is a wonderful thing!). After that, I try to weed on a regular basis by hand - pulling as much of the plant & root out as I can. I also try to get weeds before they go to seed. Over time, you will have fewer and fewer weeds (stuff still blows in though). I don't usually hoe or rake because many of the weeds around here have deep roots and will keep coming back if you don't pull them out by the roots. You may be able to weed faster, but you will find the weeds come back fast as well so you have to weed more often. If you do use a tool, try to dig down as much as you can to get as much of the root as you can and remove the dead weeds completely. For really tough weeds, I do use round up or something along those lines although I try to avoid that if I can because I have a dog and I hate having to keep her away until it's safe.

Another positive about mulch is that it enriches the earth as it breaks down, thus feeding plants (better yields, less fertilizer). Something like bark takes a long time to break down. Leaves can take up to 6 months. Grass is relatively shorter but is usually easy/cheap to replace.

Does it matter how thick the leaves, grass or whatever is?

It depends on what the mulch is. Here is a good run-down of the different types of mulch and basics on what to do or not do to make it work the best for what you want.

I use a trowel and/or my hands to pull out weeds. I usually carry a bucket with me and throw the weeds in there. I do that usually squatting. Most of my beds have mulch, so there aren't many weeds except in my veggie garden. I sometimes use the hoe in there.

If it's not too over run, I tell my kids that I'll give them a quarter for every weed they pull... then I go lay in my hammock while they scatter and fill their plastic pales. As for the yard, we have a lawn service that comes 7 times a year to do treatments.

Landscape fabric and mulch. We forgot to put our compost down underneath the fabric so my veggies are not growing like mad this year. I did fall off the organic wagon and buy some miracle grow and some powder stuff that is good for veggies. That sure perked them up!

Our big garden: Hubby tills the rows and I pull the weeds around the plants by hand. Putting down wet newspaper is more effective than the weed paper, I hear. My flowerbeds: MULCH.
