My personal opinion:

There's no trick or scam involved; business is in business to separate you from your money! Want to know how to avoid the trap:

1. Live on a budget
2. Only buy what's on the shopping list
3. Never grocery shop when you're hungry

Life is simple why bother complicating it

Great article, and great response, Rich. It really is about having a plan and sticking to it. Of course that's not glamorous to people, so they usually don't do it.

I read a statistic a few weeks ago (gotta remember where I read this), that in 1988, Americans saved (on average) 11% of their income. Today, it's like 1/2%. Of course the government is blamed for this, and yet the government has been more and more involved in our finances (read that: running their hands in our back pocket). The truth is that a significant number of Americans believe we can't make it without a video camera or a dvd player or a vacation out of town every year or an up-to-date car every 2-3 years (or 3-6 years drop dead) and certainly we should own a house. It seems (and maybe it just seems that way to me and I'm wrong) that if people don't have those things, then they consider themselves poor.

I guess what I'm saying is that stores are able to sell us so many things not just due to these tricks in the article, but because they appeal to our identity or rather the identity we want to have or maintain of ourselves.

stores cater to greed and there is an awful lot of greed in most people today.....the amount of products we waste in this country is appalling. Yesterday I was behind a guy in line who purchased 17 packs of chewing gum @1.09 per pack. He could have bought 10 packs for $1.00

So I don't blame the store...it is the indiv. choice.

But i dont get tricked. I read the article and the only one that perhaps gets me is when they have some delicious smelling food, then I may want some, but if it costs too much, then i dont.

but stores dont really trick me coz i dont have that much money on me to begin with, and so i usually just get what i want.

I dont stick to a list, but if I want something, i get it, its if I want it, not because i've been tricked.

But what if *they* made you think you want it?

Nope! if i smell t he scent of Cinnabon cinamon rolls and then i go see it and then i see i have like $10 in my purse and I dont have to use that money for something else, I might go and get one!

it took me like 2 years to buy an Ipod, i am one that does not like to have the latest technology just coz everyone else has one, but when i moved last month and found i have an hour commute each way, I knew i had to have one to be able to use that time for a lot of good.. wow 2 hours each day just able to sit back and hear all the podcasts i downloaded. believe me, no one had to convince me of wanting to get an ipod this past month! but i do refuse to go get an i-phone that is coming out this month just coz.. and its way too expensive!!!

LOL - why do you think they bake them in the stores and locate the stores in shopping mallls instead of making them down the road a mile and selling them in a grocery store!!!

We are constantly barraged with messages that encourage us to consume. The wisdom is being aware of this going on and having a plan and trying not to deviate from it no matter what comes our way -- even a "deal." I like the crack my dad used to make about "deals." He said, "Hey, I found a 'deal' the other day. It was a freight load of toothpaste, and it was such a good deal that the savings on it might make retirement. Not my retirement but someone's." How many times do we buy "deals" and they are just dead weight? But hey it was a "deal."

LOL - I'm glad you have the willpower to overcome the urge. You have to admit, though, that their attempt at manipulation here is really quite powerful.

That's the point - corporations are full of really smart people that spend tremendous sums of money to pursuade you to make a purchase. They wouldn't spend that much money if it didn't work. It's the rare person who is immune to all that, and foolish for the rest of us to think we are not influenced to some degree.

One of the best treatments of that manipulation is in the movie "The Devil Wears Prada" where the editor of the magazine explains why Andy likes a certain blue -- 'because someone in this room chose it for you a few seasons back."

Now that's a good reason to buy a freight load of toothpaste!
