My church is going through the process of replacing the senior pastor and am curious how your church/denomination does it.

Leadership council forms a search team composed of members the council and other church members who are solid Christians. Search team comes up with candidates. Candidates interviewed by leadership council. Council comes up with Sr. Pastor All of this covered by regular days of fasting and community prayer meetings.

we are replacing our senior pastor. he died suddenly and unexpectantly. first the leadership has let us grieve the loss. the pastor was greatly loved and if we would have replaced him immediately the new pastor would have lived under the shadow of the old, you know constant comparison to the other pastor. our pastor died last summer. the first of this year we nominated a search committee, i might mention at this point we are southern baptsit. the search committee was made up of church members. they have had listening meeting where they are getting the pulse of people. this is neccessary in a southern baptist church because we dont have a monolitic structure. by that i mean there is a broad statment of faith that covers southern baptist but it allows individual churches lattitude, so because of that there are southern baptist who are calvinistic, arminian, pre trib, mid trib, etc. so it is important to understand where we want to go. the search committe also got training from the church staff. now that all that has been completed they are ready to begin their search, about a year after our pastor died. hope that helps

Since you are SB, I assume you are an elder led church. Since they are your spiritual leaders, it is up to them to set the criteria they desire in the new pastor in terms of: educational level experience doctrine preaching style (expository, topical, ) Still keep the leaders in constant support through prayer/fasting. Have regular prayer gatherings asking God to bring His man to your church.

Replacing a senior pastor is something that is done according to the particular By-Laws of each church and is hopefully done with much prayer. Usually done by a committee who seeks and interviews candidates. Hopefully an interim pastor is chosen and since you mentioned senior the I would assume you have associate or assistant pastors this would be a good place to look for possible candidates or a sister church. Then usually once the candidates are narrowed they would be asked to give a sermon to the congregation so they could see if the person is agreeable to them and then finally a vote by membership once again after much prayer. At least this is what I have seen done at other churches our church currently has same pastor who started the church.

They usually have a search committee and then have them come in and give a sermon and then they vote on it.

1. Our church formed a 12 member committee to pray and choose our new senior pastor. 2. Each potential pastor was brought in and interviewed by the elders of our church. 3. The pastors gave their sermons and every member of the church got a chance to vote.

Where I work, when there is a vacancy, a letter, written by the church board, is sent to the local headquarters with an explanation of why there is a vacancy, what is needed, and what the accommodations are. The district has its own pool of seminary graduates and pastors who are interested in another position, but it can draw upon others from other areas as well. They send the church the names and qualifications of all those who are available. The board goes over the list, prays about them, and eventually selects candidates they think they would like. The candidate(s) come, with their families if at all possible, for a weekend at least. They meet with the board for a discussion, preach a sermon, and go home to pray while the board prays some more. When a candidate looks like one who will work out, they are invited back for another weekend at least, if they agree, and the same thing is done over again. If that candidate feels like s/he wishes to stay, a salary package is offered. They go back home to pray some more, and the board prays some more. The board then contacts the candidate by conference call, asks if they would like to come, and the decision is made regarding that candidate. Sometimes, the process starts all over at any point related here. _____________________________ Where I attend, we grow our leaders within our congregation, but we don't have senior pastors or a pastor -- just leaders and teachers.

Where I attend, we grow our leaders within our congregation, We do too. Our former senior pastor mentored the former youth pastor for 15ish years. Then about 5 years ago, the youth pastor became the assistant pastor. About 3-4 years after that, the assistant pastor became senior pastor and senior pastor (now 70...but doesn't look or act it!) stepped into a national men's ministry position, but is still a pastor at our church when his ministry allows him to be there. One of our deacons has recently become the new assistant pastor. He has a missionary's heart and call, so may not end up being "trained" for the senior pastor position, but being sent out instead. I still anticipate any pastor to follow this one will be grown over time in our own church.
