I asked in Xtremeteens how much the teens charge for babysitting, but didn't get any responses, so I thought I'd ask parents how much you pay a teenaged babysitter. We live in an area where the cost of living is fairly high. Please let me know what type of community and the general geographical region you live in. We live just outside of a small city in Western Washington. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I haven't paid a babysitter in a while, but my dd babysits. She began the summer charging $5.00 an hour and is now at $6.00 and will go up at the first of the year to $7.00. I insisted she start out low because of her lack of experience. Now that she has that, she can raise her rates. I must say, though, most parents want to pay her $10.00 an hour! We live in So. Cal.

Thanks, I am asking because my 14yo dd has been babysitting, and like your daughter, charging a very low rate because she was not experienced. She has now gained quite a bit of experience and I think she needs to raise her rates. She is babysitting today for three children as is charging $7 per hour. I think that's outrageous, but otoh, I think she should be paid what other teens are making. She also has her babysitter card through Girl Scouts, which included Red Cross CPR and First Aid training. She is going to use her babysitting money to pay for an up-date to keep her CPR/First Aid current through the Red Cross.

My dd is not allowed to care for 3 kids yet. She sat for two once (1 and 3 year olds) and that was a bit too much for her. They paid her $8.00 an hour because there were two of them.

Our teen babysitter does not have a set price because it is not something she does often. We pay her what we think is a fair price and we probably over pay her in many people's opinions. But, my logic of thinking is she is taking care of some precious cargo and I trust her completely so I am going to pay well. Plus I remember what it was like being a teenager and enjoying extra spending money or gas money. Back to the OPs question: She usually babysits for no more than 2 hours and we pay her $20, so that is $10 an hour. Now she did babysit one time for 4 hours and we gave her $30, so that came out to a little over $7 an hour. We just do not have a set price and it is rare that we need a babysitter so we just give her what we can afford and we feel is reasonable for US.

The only "night/weekend" babysitter we have is my 22 year old stepdaughter who is also in nursing school. We pay her 30-50 dollars for an evening and 150 if it's an overnight. BUT...she's fully able to take care of the girls, cook, etc. AND she has about 15K in student loans to pay off. Other than that...I have NO idea. NDY

I live in a semi-rural midwestern small town. I pay $2/hour for 1 child +$1 per child after that. That comes to $5/hour for us. When we moved here we were told that $2/hr was the going rate. When we were young and poor and only had 1 or 2 children we paid that rate. As we're getting older, have more money available, and more children we've adjusted accordingly. Our sitters aren't expected to do much more then play video games with the boys and make sure any dirty diapers are changed.

We have 4 children, and we pay about $8 an hour. I will give them more if the children were trouble, or sick, or they really picked up the house, or if they have to feed them multiple meals, etc.... I give them a little less if thechildren are already in bed and all they have to do is make sure the house does not burn down. The cost of living is not extremely high where we live, but the housing market is. My babysitters are from a family of 3 teenager girls (18,17, and 16) and they fight over who gets to babysit, so I assume that I pay them enough.

I live 25 miles from the largest city in my state, and around here, most folks pay about $6.00/hour. $7 for multiple kids.

Wow, I guess I just expect more for my dd....I can tell you, for a Friday night of babysitting, if she is there for at least 2 hrs, I really expect for her to be paid at least $20...for multiple kids. The folks she babysits for are very generous. We live in a small rural town, I don't know what the rate is...most folks give her any where from $20 to $50...the latter being for the lady with three kids...for a Friday evening. She gave her $75 for a Saturday once. DD was thrilled and just waits for this lady to call.

This is giving me a good perspective. I believe that my dd is charging a reasonable fee for the area we live. I was told that girls in our area charge between $7-10 per hour, more for additional children. That seemed quite high to me, so I wanted to find out if it is or not. I guess it must be correct.

I find these figures interesting because most day care workers I know, even if certified and licensed, make less then these figures per hour.

That is true of most anyone you have come to your home to do something rather than going to a center. People that take their children to childcare centers also pay less per hour and there is overhead that needs to be paid so the workers get paid less. I personally think that rates are high, but I also don't want to ask my children to take a significantly lesser amount than their counterparts are making.

I run an at home group daycare...per child I make $1.89 an hour...but multiply that by 18 and it sounds a little better. Of course I pay two employees and yes, sometimes the parents I work for will pay my daughter much better that they pay me... but, that is the way it goes. I made $12 per hour when I worked in the hospital as a nurse...years ago...but I could do private sitting on the weekend and make $30 an hour.

Just posed the question to my 17 year old daughter ( who rarely sits anymore so I asked her for the community average): She said $10.00 an hour...maybe only $8.00 if it just one child but usually $10 We live in the Cincy suburbs, not the "rich" part of town but the upper-middle class suburbs. Also, we have a major amusement park in our school district, two water parks and a lot of retail and restaurants so kids don't have to babysit in order to earn money....that might up the average a little. When my kids were little I "overpaid" if I found a great sitter.....shamelessly buying whatever loyalty I could in a tough market

THANKFULLY we don't need a babysitter anymore! But on the extremely rare times that we did I paid about $10.00-$12.00/hour. We wanted to pay well so that the next time we needed a sitter we would not have a problem. But we didn't use a sitter very often, so it wasn't much of a big deal. I'm pretty glad to be done with that!

Wow! That seems really expensive to me. We pay $5/hr with 4 kids, and round up sometimes. (7 hrs we'd do $40 instead of $35). We did about $4/hr with 3 kids.

I can't imagine anyone in our neighborhood taking as little as $5 an hour, especially for 4 kids. We live in a nice but not rich suburb. But, maybe if you had older kids who just needed someone to play with them while mommy was doing some work in the office you could get away with 5$/hour.

We live in a small rural town and I pay $2.50 an hour. When we lived in Orlando I had a cousin of one of my co-workers watch my two kids. Now we lived in the lower class part of town, and she charged me $9/hr. I paid her $90 dollars that night and for half the night the kids were sleeping. That burned my britches. Something I am wondering though, why would the area you live in matter when paying a teen babysitter?

The cost of living impacts everyone's wages, including teens. In your town $2.50 per hour may be perfectly reasonable and fair, but that's around how much I made $30 years ago. No one with any kind of maturity or experience around here would babysit for that today.

After talking to my co-worker I told her I was upset that she charged me $9/hr. She was very surprised too. She had told her cousin to not charge me much because my co-worker knew what things were like for us financially. Babysitter was going to charge me $10/hr. Oh boy, cut it back a whole dollar!!
