Some wonderful, generous friends have given me a large amount of 100% Kona coffee, and I want to store it in the best way possible to keep it fresh until I drink it.

The coffee beans arrived in five heavy duty plastic bags. The good folks at

Walmart

allowed me to use their grinder, which I used to grind up two bags of the beans, and the other three are currently in the freezer (which I am not sure is the best idea).

Any ideas on the best storage method?

I read somewhere (sorry, I can't remember where...) that you should NOT store coffee in the refrigerator or the freezer because the big change in temperature ruins the flavor. You should store your coffee in a fairly cool, dark place in an airtight container that doesn't let in light. Also it is better if you can only buy the amount of coffee that you will use in a week (for freshness). Since your friends gave you a large amount of it I would try to put it in some separate containers so that all of it isn't getting exposed to air every time you open it.

Also, if you ever get a large amount again you could buy your own grinder so that you would only have to grind what you needed that day.

Didn't you know you can purchase a grinder AT WALMART? And they're not very expensive.

I have heard not to freeze coffee, but I do keep specialty coffees there. I kind of think you're doing okay by freezing what you won't be using for a while and leaving out what you're currently using.

I think I'd like to try a cup of that Kona----cold brew?

The mass amounts you have should be fine in the freezer, but the stuff you'll be drinking within a week ought to be like Calea said in the airtight dark container. When you take it straight from the freezer and brew it, that changes the flavor, but if it's thawed it should be fine. Kona coffee is pretty good stuff.

I almost always store mine in the freezer, it's never had any ill effect on flavor. I grind my beans right before brewing.

I keep mine in the sealed containers that it came in (but its just folgers or dunkin donuts) and it seems fine.

If I got the good coffee though i'd portion it into some smaller bags and use my food saver to seal the bag.

according to Alton Brown on the food network (I love his show!!!) the temperature itself isn't the problem with storing it in the freezer, it's the sweating that it causes on the beans themselves...that can make them go bad faster or start to mold

. He suggests just an air tight container to store coffee....oh and dark place cause something about the light changes the flavor or something in it...I can't remember that part too well....but the freezer part I remember me and hubby being surprised he said and talking about it later.

Same here with us. There's no such thing as a "cool" place in our kitchen, especially in the summer. Things left out will go rancid here very quickly.

We keep the bag we're using in the cupboard above the coffee maker with the grinder - that coffee grinder is, I believe, Paul's most loved gift

We keep the bags of coffee we haven't started yet in the freezer.

We have started to get coffee in abundance - Paul gets it free at Starbucks once a week.

lol, well, you can try this too

A lot - but not all - of Starbucks grind their coffee each day in anticipation of how much they'll use throughout the day. At the end of the day they throw away the unused ground up coffee.
The store manager that Paul has talked to has no problem in the world giving him the unused coffee grinds.
So it could be worth going in, or calling, to ask about it.
But be warned - around here a lot of people go in to get the used coffee grinds to use as fertilizer. Paul went in one time and the cashier was a new one and didn't understand him and gave him like 10 lbs of used coffee grounds

Haha - so make sure they know that's not what you want

I looked at the back of my bag of coffee -- it says to store in refrigerator or freezer. Hmm! (it's whole bean)
