So I got my hair cut today for the first time in over four years. It was long enough to sit on, and now it's up to my shoulders It's definitly going to take some getting used to and I haven't had it this short since I was a little kid. Now that it's short, it's wavy/curly (a lot more than it was when it was long) and I'm not really sure what to do with it. My husband suggested some gel or something to get the curl to come out, but I wouldn't even know what to buy. It's really curly on the underside but just wavy on top. Advice? I'll post pictures as soon as my husband has time to take some so you can see what I'm talking about. Thanks

Here are the pictures. You can't see the curl all that well, but it is extremely curly underneath, near the nape of my neck:

long hair from the back

long hair from the front

short hair from the back

short hair from the front

(I don't know why the pictures are sideways... I tried to fix that but couldn't )

Oh, wow, Amy I can't believe you did it! Can't wait to see pics. I have curly/wavy hair that I have worn at that length for years. I use a lot of "soft" products so it doesn't turn out crunchy. I usually use leave-in conditioner sprays or creams, then scrunch it. I think Aussie actually has a new product I haven't tried . . . . it's a gel that has conditioner in it. I've been curious about it. Mousse also isn't as crunchy as gel. I also like to smooth a shine serum over it. It just takes a tiny bit. I bet your hair is lovely!

eta: Just thought I'd clarify the routine a little:

--Apply leave-in conditioners, mousse, etc. while wet, then start scrunching
--Scrunch all over starting at the roots as it air dries (if you have to blow dry, just do a little at the roots, blow-drying will really make it "poof"!)
--Add a tiny bit of shine serum (rub onto your palms and then scrunch into hair)

I had always kept my hair long also, It was down to my but although I couldnt sit on mine but I got it cut above my shoulder it was strange at first getting used to but then it was really nice that it only took few mins to wash and dry.

One thing that defines my curl so well is a trick my stylist told me. I use a little hair gel(it really doesn't matter what kind , but I use alcohol free stuff), and mix that with a teeny bit of hair serum(that cuts down on frizz and eliminates that "crispy" hair feeling gel alone leaves, which I hate!) and I scrunch that mixture through my hair. Then I take a clean, dry washcloth and squeeze it tightly through the curls, scrunching up towards the scalp. This gets the product to really penetrate and it highly defines the curl.

I let it air dry for about 20 minutes or so, then use a diffuser to complete it. The curls come out soft, and well defined, and doesn't have that "glued together" wet look that air drying alone does. Some people like that look, but I don't.

Gorgeous!! Did you donate your hair for a wig program?

I have no suggestions on how to do it. My hair is fine, thin, straight, and lifeless =)

ETA: I love that shirt!! And the shorter hair makes you look much younger!

Wow! I remember when I cut my hair that short after having it that long. My hair is wavy/curly too.

When it is wet, I put some sort of curling cream in it, something that will help the curl to come together, nix the frizz. Then let it either dry naturally, or use a hair dryer on low with a diffuser. Oh, and if you do blow dry it, turn your head upside down, helps with volume. It will look big at first, but then just sort of tousle it with your fingers, it will go down and put a bit of curling cream in your hands, rub together and then on your hair just lightly to help with the curl. That's what does it for me!

FWIW, I always thought of you with dark hair.

Yes, I'm giving it to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths. The ponytail was about 20" long... a little more than the 8" they require!

Younger? Eek... they already let me pay the student price when I go through the lunch line at my jr. high cafeteria without my teacher ID

Last time we had a thread where we posted pictures of ourselves, someone said they always thought of me as looking goth I think it's the dragon...

Your hair looks awesome this length!

I guess it's all about perspective - for me, your "short" haircut is pretty long already.

If you want to give your hair some sheen, dab a little marble-size amount of wax in the palm of your hands and spread evenly on your hair. Just be wary not to overdo it as it can make your hair look as if it has not been washed or greasy.

I hope you will feel better. I just cut my hair last week and I just love it the perfect time for the coming heart season.
