It's been 5 days now since I should have started my period.. I took one of those 'early' pregnancy tests a couple days before my missed period, and they both came back negative. About 2 days ago I had the absolute worse gas pains of my life.. It lasted about 3 hours. Then I started feeling kind of nauseus and sick to my stomach yesturday. All day today i've been really short of breath.. My job requires alot of bending, pushing, and picking things (and people) up, and it just seemed like every little thing I did, made me feel like I was running a marathon. I've been feeling nauseus randomly all day today. It's like it comes and goes. I can't seem to eat anything without feeling sick. So anyways, I decided to try the pregnancy test again.. (I told myself i'd wait until it'd been a week since my missed period, but I couldn't wait...) It said it could be taken at any time, but that the results would be more accurate if done first thing in the morning. So since it had 2, I decided i'd do one now, then one in the morning. Well, the one I just took came back negative. I did drink a big glass of water before taking it, so I know that might've altered it. I'm still going to take the other test in the morning.. So I guess my questions are.. Is it possible that I still might be pregnant, even if the test I take in the morning comes back negative? Could I still be taking the test too soon for it to pick it up? Thanks in advance for any suggestions about this..

Is it possible that I still might be pregnant, even if the test I take in the morning comes back negative? Could I still be taking the test too soon for it to pick it up? yes and yes. Basically tests generally test for hCG (the human growth hormone) in your urine. It starts out slow and generally doubles every day...in your blood (which is why a blood test is more accurate earlier on)...then when it gets to a certain level it can start to spill over into the urine. So until it gets to the level that it spills over then you can still test negative for a urine test. The general levels of hCG according to THIS SITE are (btw, LMP is last menstrual period)..... Guideline to hCG levels during pregnancy: hCG levels in weeks from LMP (gestational age)* : * 3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml * 4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml * 5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml * 6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml * 7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml * 9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml * 13 - 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml * 17 - 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml * 25 - 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml * Non-pregnant females: <5.0 mIU/ml * Postmenopausal females: <9.5 mIU/ml * These numbers are just a GUIDELINE-- every woman’s level of hCG can rise differently. It is not necessarily the level that matters but rather the change in the level. so as you can see the "normal" range is a very very wide range and can be vastly different for every woman. That's why most tests say to wait longer or to use more concentrated urine (first morning).....however, if your levels are on the lower end then it simply could be that not enough has built up yet in your blood to spill over into your urine.

I think Sarah said something about having the same thing happen, but with a couple of mine, the pregnancy test didn't pick up I was expecting until I was more than 8 weeks along!

As of today, I am a week late starting my period.. As I said earlier, I havn't been feeling well for probably the past 4 days or so. Just kind of sick to my stomach.. bloated.. and really short of breath for some reason.. Well, I was talking to my MIL about this yesturday, and she said it's VERY possible that I might just be irregular from coming off of birth control. I took my last pack of pills in November, So i've been "off" BC since December. It's just so frustrating not knowing. I guess i'll just keep taking pregnancy tests every so often.. until I either get a posative test or start my period..

I would go to the Dr and get a blood test. I was a week late and I knew I was going to start... Kept getting negative tests. I started a 8 days late. I think the stress keep me from starting. That is the only time I have been that late.

I'm not a good one to go by, because I wait and wait and wait to go to the doctor, but if you are more than a week "late" you could go in for a blood test. It's simple, and they'll know for sure in just a little time. Then you won't have to keep wondering. Personally I don't usually go in for such things until I am about a month late... then I start figuring that it has to come soon, because I've still not had a positive pregnancy test. Do you know for sure that you ovulated?

So after i'm a week late, I can get a blood test and they'll know for sure? There won't still be a chance? We tend to wait to go to the doctor too. I would just hate to spend a bunch of money getting tests done and blood taken, to end up starting my period a couple days later... Sorry if this is a stupid questions, but how do I know if i've "ovulated". Don't we ovulate every month?

Others can feel it or know because of a change in their body (and it could be a really slight change). In theory women do ovulate every month ~ but not all do ~ and some ovulate twice. Stress can also play havoc with your cycle and you seem to be getting stressed out about this (given you were doing pregnacy tests before your period was due). You may also be dealing with a bug of some sort ~ which can make you feel sick and mess with your cycle. While I can appreciate you not wanting to go to the doctor's unnecessarily, if it's going to help you know what's wrong with you (because people don't tend to have the problems you have without good reason) it may be worth you going.

Some women have to take medication to induce ovulation. Some women ovulate like clockwork. Just coming off the pill can make your periods wonky too. Mine seemed like clockwork until I went off the pill, had two "normal" cycles, then they stopped.

ORIGINAL: my_life_is_yours So after i'm a week late, I can get a blood test and they'll know for sure? There won't still be a chance? If your period is indeed "late" and you have already ovulated, then no, there is no chance that you would become pregnant between ovulation and when your period is due. (well, technically I guess there is always a chance... but it is very very minimal... as it would have to be that you ovulated again, or something) quote:
We tend to wait to go to the doctor too. I would just hate to spend a bunch of money getting tests done and blood taken, to end up starting my period a couple days later... this is precisely why I wait and wait and wait... because I *hate* to go to the doctor and then be told that everything is normal, and no I'm not pregnant. Personally, in your situation, I would wait until maybe 2 weeks past when you expected your period, and then call the doctor. It is possible that you just miscalculated when your period was due, since you are not charting. quote:
Sorry if this is a stupid questions, but how do I know if i've "ovulated". Don't we ovulate every month? short answer... no, we don't all ovulate every month. Try looking up natural family planning, or looking at the links that artemis mentioned, and seeing if that helps answer your questions more completely about how to know if one has ovulated. When was your last period?

I knew I was going to start because of how my body felt. It felt like it does ever month, but it just would not start. It was like having those last couple days of PMS for almost 2 weeks! I decided it was better to have my period than feel all swollen and yucky for two weeks! I have taken BC and when I got off the BC, my cycle went right back to 28 days. I am now at 29 days. Oh for the days when I low body fat and I went 35-36 days! :) But that is off the subject. The one time I thougt I was PG, I had swollen boobs. Like crazy. I could not take a shower. I have never had anything like it before or since, and I really thought I was PG.

But do you start having to deal with shortness of breath and feeling like you're running a marathon when you're doing things you normally do? The op may not be pregnant, but she may need to get a check up to make sure she doesn't need treatment for anything that is wrong with her.

I started my last period March 24th I believe.. and I think it only lasted about 3 1/2 days. I think that, if I still havn't started my period in another week, that i'll make an appointment. I just really don't want to spend the whole month wondering, and taking tests.. I can't say that I really feel like I do when i'm about to start.. I've been bloated for about a week 1/2, but that's it. The nauseua is a bit better today until I took my dogs for a walk earlier. (todays my day off, so i've just been lazy all day..) It's very possible that I just have a 'bug', and that's why i've been feeling crummy lately. I work at a nursing home, and there's always a couple residents who are sick with something.

I also happened to share what *I* do, I did not recommend doing what I do though. how long are your cycles usually? If I am calculating correctly, if your last period was on March 24th, you'd be on cycle day 39 today. I would probably call the doctor today, and tell the nurse how you've been feeling, that your period is late, and you wondered if you should come in, or what they recommend. They may want to see you sooner rather than later, or they may think it can wait until next week. It's hard to say... but I'd call.
