I bought a toddler bed for my daughter without seeing it first. That may not sound very smart, but I had been looking for one for her for so long for a good price...and this fit my budget. I knew it was white and wooden...and I saw some pictures of it...it all looked great. So, now we have it, and the paint job is scratched up pretty good almost all over. There is a screw missing that helps to hold the side bar thing in place to help from rolling off of the bed. This concerns me most because I'm afraid that the wiggle that it has will cause it to break eventually...especially if dd rolls against it hard enough at night. Now, my questions... 1. Can I spray paint a bed like this and make it look good? I am not good at painting at all...hubby is, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind, but I know that if he spends most of his work week painting (one of his many roles at his job), then he won't want to do it evenings or weekends...so if I can do it myself, I'd prefer it that way... 2. The screws are made kind of strange. The outside edge is solid with a little hole in the center with notches. I tried every screw driver in the house to remove one of what I determined to be a lesser important screw to replace the missing one. Nothing worked. I think it may take one of those "L" shaped things, but I don't know what they are called. Could I get a screw like this in a store? Would any screw the same size be okay? I'm not upset enough about these problems to complain...and I surely hope that the lady that I purchased it from is not on these boards because I've given enough information to make it clear if she saw this, she'd know it was her... I'm not upset, and my daughter LOVES the bed...but I just expected something in a little better shape... I paid less for my ds's toddler bed, used, and it was in much better shape...

I've learned that spray paint can work wonders, so yeah, you might have good luck with that. It sounds like you might have to sand at least some of it to smooth out the scratches. The "screw" you describe sounds like it needs an Allen, or hex, wrench. (Or yes, that L-shaped thing.) You should be able to replace one with any screw long enough to secure the rail.

You should definitely be able to spray paint it, but it's probably sealed and so you should either make sure to sand off all the finish or prime it with Kilz. I made the mistake of not sanding my dining room chairs enough and the spray paint had some funky effects.

Is the screw like this one: Hexagonal (the one in the circle) or possibly like this one: Phillips Or neither?!

It's definitely hexagonal and not Phillips. Phillips is what I tried...along with another...neither worked... I guess I'll have to have those Allen wrench thingys. LOL

I'd think that if your husband works as a painter and is around tools all day, he should be able to tell you what kind of screw it needs. Not all hexagonal screws are Allen screws. Torx screws are also hexagonal and sound more like what you described in the OP. Check out this site for some info on Torx screws and diagrams of a bunch of different types of screws. -Dan.
