Hi everyone!
I'm in charge of getting communion together for my church's sunday service next week. I'm new there, and since they haven't taken communion in a while, I don't really have anything to go off of. My old church did communion every 1st Friday, but I don't really remember how everything was set up. I remember the purpose and scriptures, I guess I just need to know how to set up the table and anything else I may be missing. Thanks for your help!

Some churches pass plates and everyone partakes while the plate is in front of them. Others pass plates, you hold the implements and all partake together. Some have people walk to the front and get the implements and take back to their seat. During this time, the pastor speaks about communion and prays and there is music playing.
Maybe it depends on the size of your church and what is convenient for everyone.
Do you know how they did it before and did it work?

May I suggest that you ask someone who has been there a while how they did it in the past?

It might not be a good idea to change things a lot.

Thanks
RC

Its a new church and communion hasn't been done in a while. I won't be stepping on toes. I think it would be better for the congregation to come up row by row and take the bread and wine, well juice, themselves. I want this to be as accurate as possible. And thank you both for your posts.

It makes a difference whether you partake from a common cup, or have individual cups, etc. See what kind of communion set they have--trays with the little individual cups, or a larger chalice type cup.

We have done communion with the individual cups and sharing a chalice type cup. When we do the individual cups, the deacons pass out the bread and wine. When we've done the chalice, they only pass out the bread and everyone lines up for the wine.

Accurate according to what; Scriptuire?

Set a floor table, fiill one cup with wine (jusice or whatever), take a loaf (or peta bread shaped) bread, set everyone on the floor and get after it.

Or if you don't buy the floor; then go for a common table.

And please do not forget the foot washing if you want to be accurate.

Thanks
RC

We did this a few weeks ago. It was a good reminder of what Jesus actually did and not the ritual we have traditionally attached to it.

We bought some kosher wine (not really sure why) and I made the unleaven bread (super easy recipe) and did just as RC says above.

I dunno if we'll continue this or do this every time we serve communion, but it was something that I know impacted everyone as in true remembrance of Jesus.

You are pretty much open there are many different methods of communion ceremony. If you have cups and trays then most common is to either have the congregation come forward and take elements from table return to seats then all partake together, or if you have ushers or deacons enough then you can distribute the elements either by passing down isles or individually offering the elements saying "The body of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" then with the cups "The blood or our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" or you can also have the deacon say this as the congregation comes forward. It is usually considered proper to distribute the bread first then the cup and the cup only given to those who take the bread. Some ministers actually keep one wafer or piece of bread to actually break it for ceremonial purposes not important if you congregation does not hold to it. Of course some hold it important to have wafers broken not whole for the body was broken for us, rather difficult if dealing with smaller portions. Although some churches find it acceptable to dip the bread in the wine I would not consider that true as the elements were definitely taken separately and in dipping it very much looses the remembrance of His blood shed for many. You can also get saltine crackers without the salt topping to use just break them if you don't have unleavened bread, or wafers.
Main thing of the cup juice or wine it should be from the fruit of the vine meaning grape juice or wine.

The main thing about any communion is that it is focus on the broken body and shed blood of Jesus and remembering this is what He did for us and in remembering and partaking of the elements we are making His sacrifice a part of us. It is not just eat and drink it is a memorial to our Lord and Savior of His death for us till He comes.
Read first Corinthians chapter 11 on that.

Otherwise if you want it to be original follow what RC said though you don't need to have the foot washing necessarily as that would more than likely have taken place before the meal and is not mentioned as part of communion ceremony.

This is strictly my .02 worth, but it may be wise to find out if any members of your congregation have an allergy to wheat. Otherwise, not all of your members will be able to participate in the consumption of the wafer, bread, etc. My child has celiac disease; there are gluten-free wafers, etc available.
