When I do my studies, I frequently run across passages in the Talmud that really bring the gospels to life. This one in particular I thought was really good, so I wanted to share it. In John 7:37-39, Jesus makes the announcement, "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink." Today I was reading the Talmud, and I found this passage ... R. Hanina b. Ida said: Why are the words of the Torah likened unto water-as it is written, Ho, everyone that thirsteth, come ye for water? This is to teach you, just as water flows from a higher level to a lower, so too the words of the Torah endure only with him who is meekminded. (Ta'anith 7a) Everyone that thirsteth, come ye for water If any man thirst, let him come unto me Torah = water Jesus = water Water flows from a higher level to a lower level The Torah only endures with him who is meek minded The water is flowing from Jesus to us, from the higher level to the lower level The Word (the Torah) flows from Jesus to us, and is retained by those who are meek minded I just thought that was awesome. When I read through the Talmud and see the Jewish culture come to life, I frequently catch glimpses of just how Jewish Jesus really was. There are dozens of conversations Jesus has where he practically quotes the Mishnah and/or the Rabbinical teachings. This one, though less conspicuous, seems to me to be an obvious example of his knowledge of the religious teachings of the day. I hope someone else gets a good and encouraging thought as I did.

Theo, I believe the section from the Talmud that you referenced was concerning Isaiah 55:1. But you knew that, right? Of course, the application the Talmud makes (water seeking the lower and therefore more humble station) is probably a practical application that we westerners would probably not make.

When we take the time to examine the words of Jesus closely, like you have done, we can discover meanings that come to life and make the gospel more real to us. Thanks for sharing your beautiful thoughts. Peace, Lynn

Thanks for sharing this, Theo. I was just meditating yesterday on what it takes to produce fruit: 1) nutrients (Jesus is the Bread of Life); 2) air (God is the Breath of Life; Jesus is the Word of God which proceeds out of the mouth of God); 3) sunlight (Jesus is the Light of the World) and 4) water (Jesus is the Living Water). I believe water is taken in through the roots of the plant, or the lowest part.

SophiesLadder, This is very profound and beautiful. You need to expand on it a little more...this is a powerful teaching. Theo, that was trremendous!

Very good. We seem to have to take on a "eastern" mindset. lol. We can look at creation and see many parallels to the words of the Creator. Water does flow from higher to lower. Water is fresh when it moves. Live water. Water can be corrupted if stagnated. Water is a life sustainer. We are "filled" to the "desire" or "thirst" we have. It's all around us. The Creator talking to us through His creation.

You need to expand on it a little more... Well, I would really need the body of Christ to help me deal with that, since everyone has an insight that they could add, but I have made an initial attempt which you can view under my blog, "God Is Life and the Source of Life" at www.sophiesladder.com . (It's about 850 words, too long to post here). Then you can comment here, if you wish.

These are the insights that come from knowing Jesus. I have learned these from reading the works of the saints who have gone before as well as from Jesus Himself. This is how He longs to disclose Himself and His ways to us. And it is exciting when these 'knowings' are confirmed by others. Obviously the men who wrote what you are quoting knew Jesus and His ways. And that is exciting. Thanks so much, Liveloved And this is encouragement to draw close to Jesus as He longs to be known. We can learn much from others but He is our available Teacher if we will quiet ourselves and spend time in His presence. Blessings.
