I was reading a number of articles regarding people who are on the sex offender registry for mooning (maybe as a stupid stunt in college) or urinating (which I do not condone) but. Is it moral or ethical to make them pay for it years after their sentence (if any) is paid? I am not talking about a serial predator but someone like that.. I mean do we do not make gang bangers, murderers, arsonist register..

sex offender lists are, for the most part, due to over reaction...i've seen a few of them. i think the majority of people on those lists do not belong there. no one should receive a "life sentence" without due process...these lists violate the principle of the punishment fitting the crime

I have worked as a probation officer supervising sex offenders. While the registry began as a good thing, it has had more than its fair share of unintended consequences. There are more people convicted of offenses that are not predatory that get placed on the predatory offender registration list. An 18 year old male who has sex with his 15 year old girlfriend, with her parents consent (even though they can't consent) and she gets pregnant. The hospital when adding up the ages of the mom and dad have to report that a sex crime has occurred. The young man is now marked for life because he was having sex with his girlfriend. Unfortunately, the law does not allow for the judges to exercise discretion on who registers and who does not.

I wanted to add one more thing. I don't think this is a government ploy. We asked for this. We wanted sex offenders held accountable and we wanted to know who they were. We got what we asked for and more.

So if that is the case. How come prostitutes,"Johns",and pimps do not have to register? Aren't they causing more harm that a guy who mooned or urinated ?

The Creator gave us good direction on how to avoid these problems, but we prefer to put our children in the care of the government and allow them to come and go without proper supervision.

Good point. I've given many public presentations on sex offender supervision. The one question that comes up every time is, how do we protect our chidren. Registration databases have been the politicians answer to the question. What I've told parents is that we, as parents, are the solution to the problem. We have to know our kids and know them well. We have to create a relationship with our kids so that they will implicitly trust us and not be afraid to come tell us when something, anything, is wrong. We have to know who their friends are, who thep arents of their friends are, etc. We have to know what's going n in their world. If they are into social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook, we have to know whats going on in their world and how it operates. When we hand this responsibility off to the government, we are abdicating our roles as parents. Most sexual offenses are committed by someone known and trusted by the victim and the family. Our kids need to know they can come to us so that they are not keeping secrets.
