Is it possible to remain a member of a church where they don't teach something that you feel very strongly about? I joined a church a few months ago and recently learned that they don't teach about the indwelling of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. I have been filled and speaking in spiritual tongues for several years now and I just recently noticed that there are only two people (including myself) that speaks the spiritual language. And we both do it in the church and no one else is able to.

Recommended? Probably not.

restored08,

Definately, if you are in a church that is not biblical then you should look elsewhere--unless you feel that there are christians there worth fraternizing with . . .

But, be sure your doctrine is according to the Bible and not men. The Bible clearly teaches that not ALL christians will have the gift of tongues. That does not in and of itself exclude them from the evidence of the Holy Spirit. Someone with say, the gift of discerning of spirits, teaching, healing, or even pastoring has just as big a dose of the Holy Spirit as the one speaking in tongues. ALL of these are gifts of the spirit. Here's the applicable scripture:

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the best F41 gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way--1 Corinthians 12:27-30.

The obvious answer to these questions are NO. Not everyone has these gifts. We are members and we have unique giftings. Why else would Paul have encouraged them to , "desire the best gifts" if they already had all of them?

This is biblical. If your church teaches that not all have the gift of tongues and tongues are not a prerequisite to the Holy Spirit, then I'd say per the Bible that is correct. If the church teaches that ALL must speak in tongues as evidence of the Holy Spirit, that sounds a lot like the doctrines of men--most notably the pentecostal variety. There is no division in Christ. We have to take the Bible in its global entirity. If we pick only a few things out that we like or that suit us, then we have successfully created a doctrine, or a denomination or some kind of division. You cannot go wrong if you accept EVERYTHING in the Bible.

MODERATOR'S NOTE :: ATTENTION PLEASE

This is a preemptive, "nip it in the bud" nudge.

Please do not turn this into a thread about tongues. Please keep that as an EXAMPLE of a difference in a church; it is not the central point in this thread.

To discuss speaking in tongues, CLICK HERE.

Thanks, folks!

What do you mean "no one else is able to"? Does that mean they don't have that gift or the church won't let them?

Just because they dont speak in tongues doesnt mean they are vastly different from you. You go to church to worship God and have fellowship and if thats what your church offers then there isnt a problem.

I think it goes deeper than that. If someone believes in the full workings of the Holy Spirit, and are attending a church that does not, then they are not going to be encouraged to engage themselves in the the giftings of the Spirit. It could be a faith-quencher.

It is possible... we attended a strong pentecostal church for over 3 years(then we moved away and attend a community church.)

*What we feel strongly about is Christ our Savior - nothing else will save us.

We need to consult God when deciding to join a church..If you feel that strongly about your beliefs...and this church is not teaching it...then you need to find a church that supports what you believe in...Also you are hindering others within the church if they are not able to interpret what is being said by you and the one other person...

Hi there.

I would probably want to be somewhere that teaches all the gifts of the spirit. Like someone else said, it could quench your faith if they preached against it, especially.

Are you interested in any other churches in your area?

Do they just not teach about tongues, or do they teach against and\or discourage tongues?

I could probably attend a church, at least for a time, if they didn't teach about tongues. However, I would expect them to believe the baptism of the Holy Spirit in some regard or another, even if they didn't believe tongues was the evidence of baptism. If they taught against tongues or discouraged people from using that gift, I couldn't continue attending.

I don't know if that helps or not. But for me, I couldn't attend a church that taught that something I do and believe is important is wrong (well, obviously, my church teaches that sin is wrong, but you know what I mean.)
