Nisan(or Nissan)is the first month of the ecclesiastical year and the seventh month (eighth, in leap year) of the civil year on the Hebrew calendar. It is a spring month of 30 days. Nisan usually falls in March–April on the Gregorian calendar.

Feast of Trumpets, Tishri 1, commonly called Rosh Hashanah (Head of the year), is considered the religious New Year--it begins the Days of Awe, the 10 days of repentence leading up to the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur. When you read the OT, and it reads something like "In the third month, thus & so happened", it can meant to count the months from the Biblical new year in the spring, or the relgious new year, in the fall. It's similar to the way we have a calendar year from Jan-Dec, but may have a fiscal year (in government, for instance) of Oct-Sept. In general terms, if it's discussing relgious events, the relgious calendar is used, but if it's discussing government, kings, etc, it uses the "fiscal",or Biblical calendar.

Year 1 Tishrei 1 (first day of the 7th month) was calculated to be when God started creation.
Today starts year 5769.

Almost right, Dave, may i make some small adjustments 
As i said in the post just a few above -
First day of creation is 25th of Elul, not 1 of Tishrei
Rosh Hashannah - the day from which the calendar begins to counting the years of history is the creation of man, not start of creation .
And the year started technically last night,which is yesterday in western calendar, not today.

But remember, Judiasm encourages and thrives on a plethora of opinions so trying to box everyone into any particular point of view is pointless. You have majority and minority opinions about almost everything.

Oh, darling, hard to say what my source is.... My Rabbi Eyal taught me that the first time when I was 5 years old. Hasn’t questioned it since. Absolutely common knowledge among all kinds of Judaistic flavors, so all Israeli messianics that I personally know agree; but I have no idea what American messianics hold, they might believe differently.

The 1st day of creation, on which G-d created existence, time, matter, darkness and light, was the 25th of Elul. (Rosh Hashanah, on which we mark "the beginning of Your works", is actually the 6th day of creation, on which the world attained the potential for the realization of its purpose, with the creation of the first man and woman, Adam and Eve. Rosh Hashanah is therefore the day from which the Jewish calendar begins to count the years of history; the 1st day of creation thus occurred on the 25th of Elul of what is termed -1 from creation.
