Can you please give me the best definition you have studied? I have Strong's on this computer but that is all.

This is for witnessing purposes to a man participating on these forums who is extremely intelligent.
He describes himself as "apostate" but I personally, after reading one of his replies today, doubt he ever was saved..

I tracked through about a dozen commentaries, copied more than three pages of expository explanation....then ran across two that seemed to boil all of that down to relatively simple, but excellent definitions:
He who is to God what man's word is to himself, the manifestation or expression of himself to those without him. (See on John 1:18).
(Robert Jamieson, A. R. Fausset and David Brown Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible)
The plainest reason why the Son of God is called the Word, seems to be, that as our words explain our minds to others, so was the Son of God sent in order to reveal his Father's mind to the world. What the evangelist says of Christ proves that he is God. He asserts, His existence in the beginning; His coexistence with the Father. The Word was with God (Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Whole Bible)

Of course most people have a mistaken idea of what mere means, which is why they get upset a the title "Mere Christianity".
MERE, a. [L. merus.] 1 : having no admixture : pure 2 being nothing less than : absolute 3: being nothing more than

So when Lewis says Mere Christianity, he is referring to absolute, entire, distinct from anything else Christianity.
And to be merely a Christian is to be distinct from anything else (that is to say set apart) absolutely and entirely a Christian. I'm not there yet, but that is where I am aiming.
Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
