My sisters and I have talked about male vs. female singers and have come to the conclusion that we like to listen to male singers the best. About 90% of our CD collections (not just Southern Gospel) are of male singers. When I am at church I much prefer to listen to men sing then women. Do you all think it's because we are female? Do the men prefer to hear women? It goes the same for Southern Gospel music. There are hardly any female singers that I like to listen to. The women tend to wine or scream. Some of the men scream occasionally, but for the most part seem to sing normal. The ladies I don't mind listening to are Debra Talley, Janet Paschal, Susan Wisnant, Kim Collingsworth, Lady Love Smith and a few others I can't think of right now. Actually, I just noticed that most of these women are altos. Hmm.....I like soprano singing like some of those studio singers on the church cantata demo albums. Lady Love Smith is on some of those.

TaRanda Greene does really good solo. When solo,I prefer her over her sis-in-law,Kim...IMO...Also, I love to hear Charlotte Ritchie sing. She's really great whether she be solo or singing w/a group.

Generally I prefer male voices. For sopranos, I prefer those with full voices like Tranda Greene or Kim Hopper. There are very few sopranos I like because they do have that squeally sound. I am generally not a big fan of altos, however I do like Sheri Easter.

Jess, have you listened to Janet Paschall or Karen Peck? Both are great sopranos.

As far a girly singing goes... Karen Peck!
When it comes to powerhouse "blast 'em out of the seats" singing... Rita Pearson.
For a soothing , calming and easy-listening experience... Janet Paschal.
When I want a rollercoaster combination of all three... Kim G. Hopper.
Of course, Libbi, Vestal & Taranda can/could fill the same slots. So could Little Jan, Geraldine & Connie (Hopper).
I just love me some SG girls! I always loved The Perry Sisters, The Ruppes and Rejoice.
But my all-time favorite singer is Foster. Guess most any of you who know me, know that!

I much prefer the sound of a man singing to a woman. In all areas of music, SGM, CCM, Country, Pop, church music... my ears just like the male voice better. And not to put the tenor into the "ladies part"  but there are few tenors that I really just love to hear (David Sutton, Scott Rogers...) Maybe it's that high pitch that bothers me... because I also don't enjoy the sound of someone whistling. Anyway, I do have some favorite female singers: Terah Penhollow, Libbi Stuffle, Sonya Isaacs, Chris Freeman.

Most of my favorite professional singers are men--in no particular order, George Younce, Mark Trammell, Glen Payne, Glen Allred, Gene McDonald, Randy Byrd, Arthur Rice, Ernie Haase, Ernie Phillips, Eric Phillips, Jay Parrack, Mike Holcomb, Roger Bennett, Joseph Habedank, Tracy Stuffle, James Blackwood, Jimmy Blackwood, Tim Duncan, Ryan Seaton, Doug Anderson, Brian Free, Jeremy Lile, Larry Ford, Guy Penrod, Jeff Chapman, Billy Hodges...and I think that list would just be a start. 
But Libbi Perry Stuffle, Kim Collingsworth, and Vestal Goodman are high on my list of favorites, and I also like some of the other legends, like Chris Freeman, Kim Hopper, Lily Fern Weatherford, and Debra Talley.

Strange, but I usually prefer male singers who can sing really high, and female singers with strong lower ranges. I don't really care to hear deep baritones or basses or stratospheric sopranos on solo parts.
Odd, huh?

I can't say I prefer male to female singers, but there does seem to be more males. Most of my favorite female singers have been listed, but I would add Naomi Sego, Allison Durham Speer, and Sandy Patti. I think my favorite two female singers would be Janet Paschal and Debra Talley. As I think about this post I would also add Charlotte Ritchie as a favorite.

So the Imperials sound like the Inspirations? The Dove Brothers sound like Palmetto State? Maybe the Statesmen and the Blackwoods sounded alike? How about our group Southern Sound...I never thought we sounded very much like anyone else, but maybe I am wrong.

I have listened to Janet Paschall, but it's been a while. I will give her another listen and see what I think. As far as Karen Peck, I think her voice is pretty thin and plain. My church is full of sopranos that sound just like her, and some better.

call me weird, but I really like the country gospel ladies like jeanette cooke, peg mckamey and kevin spencers mama. but my favorite of the good ole girls would be pegs sister, carole

I DEFINITELY prefer the male voices although there are a few female voices I really like (Susan Whisnant, Lauren Talley). I think it is natural for us women to prefer the male voices. I wonder, is it just as natural for men to prefer female voices? My dad always gives us a hard time about liking the men!!!
