So, obviously in light of my recent situation...I could really use a discussion on what it means to "Guard You Heart". What does this mean to you? How do you exercise this principle with a potentially new romantic relationship without hindering it's growth? In addition to that, how do you exercise this principle with friends, family and loved ones?

Hmmmm. I haven't read your recent "situation," but saw the title of this post and wanted to respond based on the "guarding your heart" part of it. From a Biblical viewpoint, "guarding your heart" is given to us as sprititual wisdom from King Solomon in the Book of Proverbs. It's mentioned many times throughout Proverbs and is simply the notion of constantly checking your heart to make sure it is in line with God's teaching. Solomon warns of those who do not guard their hearts and who allow impurities to enter in and corrupt their morality. ...He says that the heart is the doorway to either blessings or destruction. And who wants destruction right? In a practical sense and in many verses throughout Proverbs dealing with relationships, Solomon warns us to be on the look out for people with evil/corrupt motives. They are lurking around trying to seduce you into evil (be it sexual or social...financial, etc.). We are also to guard our hearts against our own misunderstandings of right/wrong and the world (Solomon says "lean not on your own widsom, but the Word of God"). So we also need to check ourselves constantly to make sure our own desires, intentions, and thoughts are of God. I think in relationships, we need to be careful with who we associate with and who we allow to influence our thoughts and actions. We need to constantly check our hearts to see if it is in line with God's Word and also test other people to see if they are in line with God as well. It's one of the single most important things we need to do in order to avoid disaster in life. Where the heart is is where our actions follow.

I had no idea what that meant either, but am so glad that I checked out this thread. I always thought it was meant on a more relational term, but this makes more sense to me Biblically. Thank you for your response to this Solomonsprayer.

It helps to study the passage. Here is Proverbs 4:20-27: My son, pay attention to what I am saying; incline your ear to my words. Don't let them out of your sight, keep them deep in your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to their whole being. Above everything else, guard your heart; for it is the source of life's consequences. Keep crooked speech out of your mouth, banish deceit from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze on what lies in front of you. Level the path for your feet, let all your ways be properly prepared; then deviate neither right nor left; and keep your foot far from evil.
