http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=1911 The US Geological Service reported in April 2008 that there are massive oil deposits in both the Dakotas and Montana as well as the Rocky Mountains that would abolish all dependence on foreign oil. Is this new to anyone else but me?

I heard it yesterday. But if you think there's a fight to take oil from the ANWR, just wait 'till the oil companies want to rape the pristine Rocky mountains! Or, can you imagine how Rushmore would crumble if we depleted the reserves from underneath the Monument? Not to mention the liberal movie stars who just about own up all of Montana these days.

We've already got that fight going on near Rifle, CO.

would abolish all dependence on foreign oil. That is a great thing and don't know why US who are a big consumer of it is not doing much about looking for that and etc since long time ago... If it is because politics and green party excesses it sucks.. still US companies were making huge cars big tanks not economic and people buying it not long ago. Plus I do not understand why during the last 20 years at least, states did not invest more in alternatives, other transportation, trains, reliable public services? Sure this country is huge and diverse but what was brought new to the table as option? I guess not much. Did not cross peoples mind that US gas were sooo cheap for long time compared to rest of the world and this situation would not last? Now there are other most populated nations needing oil as US and competing to get it at all costs, I suppose. I hope USA start to do something about oil and be independent as possible. Now I am remembering Jr. and the Dallas tv series... I supose Texas do not have oil as it used to in those days.

I'm just curious as to how much we actually get from the Mideast. When Hurricane Ike hit, we had our gas supplies cut off for several days and even ran out of gas in a number of places because we get our oil from Texas. So, if we get so much oil from Texas, then why is mideast oil, such a big deal?

It's not where the oil comes from it's where it's refined. I think your gas is refined on the coast and that was shut down wasn't it? Bob

About 25% of the gas that's refined in the US is done so here on the gulf coast. Major storms tend to shut those down. Talk to Greenpeace about getting some other refineries built up off the coast if you don't want shortages like you've seen in the past week during the hurricane season.

Is this new to anyone else but me? No, it's not new. You'll notice that they describe the oil as being "technically recoverable." That means that it's possible to get it, not that it's easy. This site suggests that the geology of the area is not as conducive to drilling as the "gushers" we're used to seeing. Low-permeability, low-porosity, and a relatively thin vein of rock make this oil tough to get at, and it wasn't until recently that technology has made it a viable option. A bit more from Snopes and Motley Fool. -Dan.

I believe the EPA and the various formulas of gas contribute to this also. Aren't there like 22 different blends of gas that have to be refined different?
