Once you get settled in, visit some churches in your area. In most major metro areas you'll find a church on every corner. Just visit until you find one that suits your needs and level of activity. You'll find mens groups that vary in activity from sitting in a single candle lit room reading passages, to groups who get out there twice a month and remodel homes for the elderly. Also check into Civic clubs like Rotary. We get a ton of business from networking within our local civic club. Meeting are very informative, and are not always about business. The last speaker was a missionary talking about his travels and missions.

Thanks! I will do this as you say and look for churches and groups near us. We will be living in the middle of New York so I do not think the problem will be finding one, it will be deciding which one! I also should read about American sports. Baseball and American football are very popular I understand, but I must admit that they baffle me as to how they are played. Basketball is more familiar. And even in the USA, people are finally starting to watch football (what Americans call "soccer"). Thor

While football and baseball are traditional American sports, I'm not interested in them. I grew up in a racing family, racing sports cars. So while I'll go to a ball game every now and then with a group, you'd more likely find me at a local track... road races or NASCAR.

Is there other racing in the USA too, like equestrian racing? We are great fans of equestrian events; my wife competed when she was young, and we have always enjoyed the horse races.

No, just NASCAR. Just kidding - all the horseraces (as far as I know) is related to gambling.

The horseracing is all for gambling? How unusual! In Europe, of course, people gamble on everything. The NASCAR sounds like fun though; auto racing is a great sport to watch with one's family!

Most horsey activities are in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. Of course some states have greyhound racing too. For auto racing, NASCAR is not your only choice... open wheel Indy and F1 are big here too. Also have many sport car racing clubs, like SCCA, running everything you can think of at local tracks. NASCAR "Hometown" series runs on most local tracks Friday nights and Saturdays. Being in New York, you have a ton of sports to look forward to. 2 major league baseball teams, football, basketball, and hockey. Hockey is bigger in the northeast than it is in the south, but we have teams here too. Funny thing though, the last time I went to see the fights... a hockey game broke out.

Is there much football (soccer) in New York, do you know? Since my family is Danish and Italian, it is what we mostly play and watch, but I understand it is not so popular in the USA. Thanks for the advice! I will find out where such events are near where we will live in New York! Thor

Thanks for the soccer information! I will look for this. I also want to see an American football game; I have not seen one except for parts of it on television. Thor

Thanks very much! I am checking out the Jets! I understand that, while sports fans in the US are passionate, following a particular team does not imply any sort of political affiliation. In some parts of Europe, you can be accused of being a Fascist or a Communist if you back a particular team. My sons are very eager to attend an American football game so I am going to find tickets. Thanks again, APZR! Thor

But all of our pro teams play teams from other states in the Union or Canada, so we are all friends looking for some fun. Friendly rivalry jib-jab/joking is usually taken light heartily, a part of the sport... except for the occasional rude drunk looking for a fight. But you can pick those guys out and avoid them. BTW, I forgot about the championship team this past year... the New York Giants! http://www.giants.com/ In NY, you have 2 pro baseball teams AND 2 pro football teams. All we have in Atlanta is 1 really good baseball team, and a football team that has reek of scandals.

This is very good! I would like to see a game when the two teams from the same place play each other! When this happens in some countries in Europe (NOT Denmark!) we have riots! Thanks again for your very friendly and helpful advice! Thor

You'll find too that there are a lot of college sports around. In the south, college sports seem to be bigger and more popular than in the north. But many pro team fans keep track of college too... to see what the new crop or recruits will bring to the field.
